Gastrointestinal Bleeding in COVID-19 Patients: A Rapid Review
The incidence of COVID-19 gastrointestinal manifestations has been reported to range from 3% to 61%. There are limited data on the incidence rates and risk factors associated with gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) in patients with COVID-19. A rapid review has been designed to investigate whether there is a relationship between COVID-19 and GIB in adult patients. PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases have been analyzed. A total of 129 studies were found; 29 full texts were analyzed, and of these, 20 were found to be relevant to the topic. (Source: Gastroenterology Nursing)

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Self-Management: Exploring Adolescent Use of an Online Instagram Support Community
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the challenges adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) experience with disease self-management as expressed in an online Instagram social support community. Public Instagram posts between January and December 2019 were manually collected from an online IBD support community. To focus on adolescent self-management needs, only posts from Instagram users who (1) indicated they had inflammatory bowel disease, (2) were 13–24 years old, or were in middle school, high school, or college were collected. Using thematic analysis, authors independently coded and identif...

The Patient Experience of an Inadequate-Quality Bowel Preparation During the Colonoscopy Process: A Qualitative Study
This study aimed to explore patients' perceptions of experiencing an inadequate preparation compared to those with only an adequate-quality bowel preparation history. Quantitative analyses were conducted for three one-item questions (e.g., anxiety rating) with ordinal scales. Qualitative data were collected from audio-recorded and transcribed telephone interviews (N = 20) and anonymous online surveys (N = 59). An inductive/deductive coding system was constructed, and themes were generated to form a conceptual framework. Brief quantitative results are provided. Themes of the colonoscopy process include context, prepreparati...

Reducing Recovery Times in Outpatient Liver Biopsies: Role of the GI Nurse
This project is aimed to identify whether recovery times could be reduced in patients undergoing an outpatient liver biopsy. Liver biopsies are typically performed in a hospital setting, and many facilities require patients to recover for multiple hours, sometimes ranging from 4 to 6 hours. This can discourage the patient from undergoing the biopsy. Multiple studies have examined recovery times and determined patients can safely recover and be discharged within 1–2 hours post-liver biopsy. In this retrospective review, the data of 60 outpatients who underwent a liver biopsy from June to December 2020 were analyzed. Analy...

Exploring Gastrostomy Care-Related Information Needs in Patients With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Their Families
The aim of this study was to explore gastrostomy care-related information needs in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients and their families. This was a quantitative content analysis. Data were collected from a major online patient community in Korea by analyzing posted free texts. A total of 173 posted free texts from January 2010 to July 2020 from the “question and answer” bulletin board were analyzed. Questions were mostly asked by the adult children of patients, and the most frequent question period was “after hospital discharge.” The commonly mentioned topics related to gastrostomy and G-tube complicatio...

The American College of Gastroenterology's 2021 Colorectal Cancer Screening Guidelines: A Summary for Gastroenterology Nurses & Associates
Colorectal cancer ranks third for both men and women as the most common cause of cancer death in the United States. Screening allows for removal of polyps before they turn to cancer or by identifying early-stage colorectal cancers, which are most treatable. The American College of Gastroenterology recently released an update of their 2009 recommendations, which includes average risk individuals between ages 45 and 49 years due to the increased incidence of early-onset colorectal cancers. They consider screening two types of screening options: (1) one-step colonoscopy, which is both diagnostic and therapeutic and (2) two-st...

Decreasing the Incidence of Hypoxia and Airway Maneuvers During GI Procedures
This study was designed to determine whether the use of a high-flow nasal cannula is associated with a decreased incidence of hypoxia or airway obstruction in patients undergoing propofol sedation in the gastrointestinal laboratory with a STOP-BANG score ≥5. High-flow nasal cannula was administered at 70 L/min on 27 patients with a STOP-BANG score ≥5 receiving monitored anesthesia care sedation for an esophagogastroduodenoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, or colonoscopy procedure. Patients were compared to a group from a previous project without the use of high-flow nasal cannula assessing whether hypoxia, apnea, or the ne...
