The Role of an Inflammatory Bowel Disease Nurse in the Follow-Up of Patients From a Latin American Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program
Inflammatory bowel disease requires long-term treatment to maintain disease control. Favorable follow-up of patients indicates attention from a multidisciplinary team, in which the nurse's responsibilities have great importance. The aim of this observational, descriptive study was to describe the role of an inflammatory bowel disease nurse in the management of patients in a tertiary center in Chile, including all patients in follow-up between January 2016 and April 2017. Decompensated cirrhosis of the liver is a common and debilitating illness causing disability, readmissions to hospital, and decreased quality of life, and can lead to liver cancer. The advent of the chronic liver disease nurse (CLDN) position in our hospital in 2009 was the first role in Australia dedicated to providing care to patients with cirrhosis. Quality Improvement Initiative: The Administration of Early Nutrition Following Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy Tube Placement in Children
It is common practice for providers to wait up to 24 hours to begin enteral feedings using a newly placed gastrostomy tube in children. As a quality improvement initiative, guidelines were developed to begin early enteral nutrition 4 hours following gastrostomy tube placement. These patient care guidelines standardized electronic ordering, dosing, and feeding administration instructions. Healthcare professionals from the departments of gastroenterology, case management, and nutrition were asked to evaluate the new process by completing a questionnaire. Changes were made to the quality improvement initiative on the basis of...

Medication Adherence Across the Life Span in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Implications and Recommendations for Nurses and Other Health Providers
This article reviews the differences and similarities in medication adherence between adolescent and adult cohorts with inflammatory bowel disease. The review covers the rates of medication adherence, as well as predictors, consequences, and related interventions. Rates of adherence were more favorable among adolescents (65%–90%) than among adults (55%–70%). Major risk factors for poor adherence in adolescents include low medication knowledge, not establishing good medication habits initially, and peer victimization with low social support. For adults, nonadherence is more frequently unintentional (e.g., forgetting) an...

The Potential of Integrated Nurse-Led Models to Improve Care for People With Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders: A Systematic Review
Functional gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia are extremely common, debilitating, and costly. Although diagnostic guidelines and effective management options exist, management is suboptimal, with long waiting lists, delayed diagnosis, and poor patient outcomes. The aim of this systematic review was to explore and evaluate evidence for existing models of care for functional gastrointestinal disorders. Thirty-eight studies pertaining to the diagnosis or management of functional gastrointestinal disorders were found; however, only 6 investigated a full model of care. Five stud...

A Single-Center Retrospective Chart Review to Determine Whether the Presence of Comorbidities Affects Colon Cancer Screenings in African Americans
Colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related death in African Americans. Although the rates of colon screenings have risen, African Americans remain to be underscreened, and are more likely to present with advanced lesions. This population has a higher prevalence of inflammatory comorbidities, and their effects on screenings have not been fully explored. Along with higher rates of comorbidities, the Southeastern United States is one region for the highest rates of colorectal cancer. The purpose of this study was to determine whether people with comorbidities were more likely to have a screening colonoscopy. Co...

Relationships Between Abdominal Pain and Fatigue With Psychological Distress as a Mediator in Women With Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Women with irritable bowel syndrome often report fatigue, along with abdominal pain and psychological distress (i.e., depression and anxiety). There is little information about the relationships among these symptoms. Using a secondary data analysis (N = 356), we examined the relationship between abdominal pain and fatigue and whether psychological distress mediates the effect of abdominal pain on fatigue in both across women and within woman with irritable bowel syndrome. Data gathered through a 28-day diary were analyzed with linear regressions. The across-women and within-woman relationships among same-day abdominal pain...
