Impact of a Telephone Intervention on Bowel Preparation Quality for Colonoscopy in the Elderly
In this study, no significant differences were observed in age, gender, body mass index, educational level, smoking and/or alcohol drinking, waiting time to colonoscopy, reasons for colonoscopy, and colonoscopic findings between the control group and the study group. Participants in the study group had higher adequate bowel preparation and compliance than the control group (83.1% vs. 59.5%, p = .03; 96.4% vs. 74.7%, p (Source: Gastroenterology Nursing)

Inappropriate Prescribing of Proton Pump Inhibitors in Outpatient Clinics
Proton pump inhibitors are the commonly prescribed drugs for acid-related disorders. However, many of those prescriptions are inappropriate in inpatient and outpatient settings according to the recommended guidelines. Many studies have been conducted in inpatient clinics, but data about the appropriateness of proton pump inhibitor prescribing in outpatient clinics are scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine inappropriate proton pump inhibitor prescribing rates among patients admitted to a tertiary hospital family medicine outpatient clinic. A total of 259 patients (median age = 59 years; 72.6% women) were...

Gut Microbiome and Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): Implications for Nursing Care of Individuals Living With Chronic Metabolic Diseases
This article aims to describe the new role of gut microbes in the development of NAFLD, focusing on the potential relationship between gut microbes and symptoms of NAFLD, as well as the mechanism of action of the “gut–liver–brain” axis. This information can be useful in developing precise nursing interventions for NAFLD patients, restoring the “health” of gut microbes, and alleviating the symptom burden of chronic metabolic disease in NAFLD. Clinical Manifestations of Gastrointestinal Symptoms in COVID-19 Patients: An Integrative Review
After the outbreak of novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Wuhan, China, its spread to other countries is rapidly increasing. In this integrative review, we report the prevalence of gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with COVID-19. For this purpose, available articles on gastrointestinal manifestations in patients with COVID-19, which were reported from China, were reviewed. All reviewed articles were searched from December 11, 2019, to June 20, 2020, based on specific key words. Related findings in these articles show that the main target of COVID-19 is lung tissue, as after the virus enters the body, it mainly...

Educational Video on the WeChat Platform Can Effectively Improve the Quality of Bowel Preparation: A Prospective, Randomized, Controlled Study
Bowel preparation is a core issue in the quality of colonoscopy. We attempted to investigate whether an educational video via WeChat (a widely used mobile social media app) improved the compliance of patients and quality of bowel preparation. We enrolled 198 colonoscopy patients aged 35–70 years. They were randomly divided into the WeChat group (100 cases) and the control group (98 cases). The outcomes were the compliance of patients in the bowel preparation process and quality of the bowel preparation according to the Boston Bowel Preparation Scale. Participants' compliance increased markedly in the WeChat group compare...

Nurse- and Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist-Led Bowel Training in Patients With Fecal Incontinence in a Tertiary Care Center
The objective of this study was to evaluate combined nurse- and physical therapist-led bowel training sessions in a tertiary care center. This was a prospective, cross-sectional study. All patients with fecal incontinence between 2015 and 2016 with and without previous conservative management were included. Combined conservative treatment was defined as the use of stool-bulking agents (psyllium fibers) with or without antidiarrheal medication (loperamide) in combination with biofeedback or pelvic floor muscle training. Questionnaires regarding fecal incontinence (Vaizey incontinence score) and quality of life (Short Form H...

Validity and Reliability of the Japanese Version of the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8 in Patients With Ulcerative Colitis
The Morisky Medication Adherence Scale is a clinically relevant tool used to evaluate medication adherence. In the current study, the validity and reliability of a Japanese version of the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale and factors related to low adherence were investigated in patients with ulcerative colitis. The original English version was translated into Japanese and then 3 institutions in Japan administered that Japanese version to 428 patients taking medication. Factor validity, internal consistency, and correlations between the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale and adherence were calculated on the basis of patie...

Health-Related Quality of Life Among Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Case Control Study
The aim of this study is to compare health-related quality of life between inflammatory bowel disease patients and age-/gender-matched controls while taking into account comorbid conditions (such as diabetes and heart disease). Data from the 2015 and 2016 National Health Interview Survey were used. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (n = 951) were age- and gender-matched to noninflammatory bowel disease patients (n = 3,804). Patients with inflammatory bowel disease were more likely to be diagnosed with an airway disease (p (Source: Gastroenterology Nursing)
