Health-Related Quality of Life in Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affects up to 20% of the global population and is associated with impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate differences in HRQoL of those with IBS compared with healthy controls and to examine whether HRQoL improves following psychological intervention. Online databases were searched for articles from 2002 to 2017. Studies were screened and data extracted according to predetermined criteria. A total of 4,154 citations were identified from which 36 were eligible for inclusion. Eight studies compared HRQoL of those with IBS (n...

Efficacy of Sedation by Midazolam in Association With Meperidine or Fentanyl and Role of Patient Distress During Elective Colonoscopy
Meperidine and fentanyl are opioids currently used in addition to midazolam for sedation and analgesia during colonoscopy in Italy. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of patients' psychological state before elective colonoscopy on the efficacy of the sedation regimens. Eighty outpatients who underwent an elective colonoscopy were included in our study. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale questionnaire was self-administered to evaluate basal anxiety and depression state. The rate of baseline discomfort was evaluated by a standard 100-mm visual analog scale. Sedation was obtained alternatively with a midazol...

Differences in Factors Affecting the Quality of Life Over Time After the Gastrectomy in Patients With Stage I Gastric Cancer
This study examined QoL of patients with Stage I gastric cancer over time following gastrectomy and the effects of QoL subdomains on the patients' overall QoL over time after surgery. Data were collected from 138 patients with Stage I gastric cancer who had undergone gastrectomy within the previous 3 years. Data were classified into 3 groups according to the length of postsurgery time: 12 months or less (Group 1), 13–24 months (Group 2), and 25–36 months (Group 3). A confirmatory factor analysis was performed to examine the effects of QoL subdomains. Quality of life of patients with Stage I gastric cancer improves over...

Optimal Colonoscopic Surveillance Interval After Normal Baseline Screening Colonoscopy
The optimal colonoscopic surveillance interval in the Chinese population is unclear. The present study aimed to assess the optimal colonoscopic surveillance interval after normal baseline screening colonoscopy to avoid overuse or underuse of colonoscopy. This retrospective study included individuals with normal baseline colonoscopy who had undergone at least 2 follow-up colonoscopy examinations at the Digestive Endoscopy Center of our hospital between 2000 and 2013. The risk factors for adenoma and the optimal colonoscopic surveillance interval were assessed. A total of 1,005 individuals (419 men; mean age, 49.34 ± 13.29 ...

Peer-Led Education Expedites Deprescribing Proton Pump Inhibitors for Appropriate Veterans
Costly proton pump inhibitors have been widely prescribed since the 1990s for prevention and treatment of ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Evidence published since 2012 demonstrates risks associated with taking proton pump inhibitors for longer than 8 weeks. Primary care providers mostly deprescribe proton pump inhibitors for persons not meeting criteria for long-term use. Many patients resist discontinuation. (Source: Gastroenterology Nursing)
