Early Predictors of Trajectories of Tobacco Use Level from Adolescence to Young Adulthood: A 16-Year Follow-Up of the TEMPO Cohort Study (1999 –2015)
Conclusions: Tobacco smoking trajectories from adolescence to adulthood are associated with early substance use initiation, parental smoking, and academic difficulties.Eur Addict Res 2019;25:2 –9 (Source: European Addiction Research)

Expression Levels of the Tyrosine Hydroxylase Gene and Histone Modifications Around its Promoter in the Locus Coeruleus and Ventral Tegmental Area of Rats during Forced Abstinence from Morphine
Conclusions: Results of the present study, for the first time, demonstrate the involvement of histone H3 acetylation in the regulation of TH gene expression in the LC of rats during forced abstinence from morphine.Eur Addict Res 2018;24:304 –311 (Source: European Addiction Research)

Nalmefene, Given as Needed, in the Routine Treatment of Patients with Alcohol Dependence: An Interventional, Open-Label Study in Primary Care
Conclusions: Patients with alcohol dependence treated in primary care with nalmefene, taken as needed, in conjunction with simple psychosocial support, significantly reduced their alcohol consumption. Treatment was well tolerated.Eur Addict Res 2018;24:293 –303 (Source: European Addiction Research)

The LASSO Program in Oslo: Harm Reduction Using Buprenorphine-Naloxone (Suboxone ®) in a Low Threshold Setting
Conclusion: This study shows that BPNX is highly effective in treating marginalized heroin addicts in low threshold settings. Even during their first attempt, 76.4% completed induction. There were no cases of severe precipitated withdrawal. Prolonged lag time affected neither the length of first treatment nor the total treatment length. Individualized induction readiness approach and motivation were central to the above results.Eur Addict Res 2018;24:286 –292 (Source: European Addiction Research)

Investigating Sex-Specific Characteristics of Nicotine Addiction Using Metabolic and Structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging
This study sought to examine the sex-specific influence of nicotine addiction on gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) and the white matter (WM) microstructure. Sixty healthy subjects (smokers/non-smokers) underwent structural and metabolic magnetic resonance imaging scans. Results showed alterations in WM integrity (measured as changes in fractional anisotropy [FA] and GABA in smokers versus non-smokers and females versus males. No overall significant smoking and sex-specific interactions were observed in this study. However, on comparing female smokers with female non-smokers, significantly higher GABA and FA values were obser...

The Impact of Childhood Maltreatment on Age of Onset of Alcohol Use Disorder in Women
It is unclear whether exposure to childhood maltreatment is associated with the age of onset of alcohol use disorder (AUD). A group of socially stable women with AUD seeking treatment (n = 75) were interviewed using the Addiction Severity Index and the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. They also filled out the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-short form. Emotional abuse, sexual abuse and multiple childhood traumas were found to be associated with earlier onset of AUD. Multivariable linear regression analysis showed that independent predictors for an earlier onset of AUD were exposure to emotional abuse (beta = â...

The Impact of the Opioid Antagonist Naloxone on Experimentally Induced Craving in Nicotine-Dependent Individuals
Conclusion: Naloxone influenced nicotine withdrawal and strengthened significantly by cue exposure, both on objective measurement and on craving scales. These findings suggest an involvement of the endogenous opioid system in the development and maintenance of nicotine dependence.Eur Addict Res 2018;24:255 –265 (Source: European Addiction Research)

Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of Genotype-Guided Treatment Allocation in Patients with Alcohol Use Disorders Using Naltrexone or Acamprosate, Using a Modeling Approach
In conclusion, pharmacogenetic treatment allocation of AUD patients to naltrexone, based onOPRM1 genotype, can be a cost-effective strategy, and could have potential individual and societal benefits. However, more evidence on the impact of genotype-guided treatment allocation on relapse is needed to substantiate these conclusions, as there is contradictory evidence about the effectiveness ofOPRM1 genotyping.Eur Addict Res 2018;24:245 –254 (Source: European Addiction Research)

Schema Modes and Personality Disorder Symptoms in Alcohol-Dependent and Cocaine-Dependent Patients
Substance use disorders (SUD) and personality disorders co-occur frequently. This relationship might be understood by studying schema modes (a key concept in Schema therapy), which explain the dysfunctions characterizing personality disorder patients. In the present study, we compared the schema modes and personality disorder symptoms between alcohol-dependent patients, cocaine-dependent patients and healthy controls. We found indications that specific schema modes are specific for SUD patients. However, no differences between specific subtypes of SUD patients (alcohol- vs. cocaine-dependent patients) could be found regard...

Risky Alcohol Use: The Impact on Health Service Use
Conclusions: Risky drinkers use more expensive services, such as hospitals and emergency rooms, but not PHC services, which may suggest that prevention strategies and alcohol interventions should also be implemented in those settings.Eur Addict Res 2018;24:234 –244 (Source: European Addiction Research)

Neurocognitive Functioning in Alcohol Use Disorder: Cognitive Test Results Do not Tell the Whole Story
Conclusion: Like other psychiatric patients, patients with AUD show marked neurocognitive impairments that seem to be aggravated by, for example, distraction and lack of effort. This tentatively suggests that performance only partly reflects cortical impairments in areas hosting neurocognitive faculties. Contextual factors deserve greater attention in patients with addiction. The cross-sectional design of our study limits conclusions relating to causality.Eur Addict Res (Source: European Addiction Research)

Increased Risk-Taking Behaviour and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Val66Met Polymorphism Correlates to Decreased Serum Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Level in Heroin Users
Conclusions: These results indicate that genetic variant Met66 decreased the serum BDNF levels in combination with self-reported risk-taking propensity among heroin users. If results of future work confirm the influence of this combined effect between neurotrophic genotype and risk-taking behaviour, 66Met carriers might require higher levels of intervention to overcome their drug use pattern and risky behaviour.Eur Addict Res 2018;24:189 –200 (Source: European Addiction Research)
