Toward a socially just diversity science: Using intersectional mixed methods research to center multiply marginalized Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC).
Conclusions: We argue that intersectional mixed methods research includes four tenets: (1) research questions prioritize multiply marginalized BIPOC individuals, (2) the multiple realities of BIPOC individuals are honored and embraced, (3) identity-related variables (e.g., self-reported discrimination) are studied alongside systems-level variables (e.g., structural racism), and (4) scholars engage in critical reflexivity. We also propose that intersectional mixed methods research can advance scholarship on multiply marginalized BIPOC individuals by fulfilling one of five purposes: Triangulation, complementarity, expansion,...

Partnering with refugee communities to improve mental health access: Going from “why are they not coming” to “what can I (we) do differently?”.
Refugees are disproportionally impacted by trauma and its negative sequelae. Even after being resettled in the United States, refugees face disparities in accessing services due to the stigma attached to mental health symptoms and the paucity of culturally and linguistically accessible services. Thus, there is a great need to develop methods that facilitate the engagement of refugee communities. Community-Based Participatory Research recommends the forming of equal and equitable partnerships with communities and stakeholders to enhance community capacity and ownership of the research process and outcomes (Israel et al., 19...

“You don’t believe in God? You ain’t Black”: Identifying as atheist elicits identity denial from Black ingroup members.
Conclusions: Black atheists experience general anti-atheist bias (e.g., perceived as untrustworthy), as well as unique anti-atheist bias in the form of racial identity denial. These findings extend previous research on identity denial and intragroup dynamics and advance our understanding of the relationship between religious identification and racial identity denial within the Black community. Shining a light on cultural neuroscience: Recommendations on the use of fNIRS to study how sociocultural contexts shape the brain.
Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, Vol 29(1), Jan 2023, 106-117; doi:10.1037/cdp0000469Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a portable neuroimaging technique that may serve as a methodological tool for studying how sociocultural contexts can shape the human brain and impact cognition and behavior. The use of fNIRS in community-based research may (a) advance theoretical knowledge in psychology and neuroscience, particularly regarding underrepresented ethnic–racial communities; (b) increase diversity in samples; and (c) provide neurobiological evidence of sociocultural factors supporting human d...

Communal mastery and associations with depressive and PTSD symptomatology among urban trauma-exposed women.
Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, Vol 28(4), Oct 2022, 513-522; doi:10.1037/cdp0000473Objective: Racial and ethnic minority women from low-resource urban communities experience disproportionately high rates of trauma exposure. Higher rates of lifetime trauma exposure are strongly associated with subsequent psychological sequela, specifically depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Communal mastery is the ability to cope with challenges and achieve goals by being closely interconnected with friends, family, and significant others. Yet, it is unknown if communal mastery is protective specificall...
