The relationships between emerging adult transition themes, adverse childhood experiences, and substance use patterns among a community cohort of Hispanics.
Background: Emerging adulthood (ages 18–26) is a time of identity exploration, experimentation, focusing on self or others, and instability, themes captured in the Inventory of Dimensions of Emerging Adulthood (IDEA). Preliminary evidence suggests that emerging adults (EAs) with a history of adverse childhood experiences (ACE) score differently on transition dimensions than their peers, however, the role of ACE in the IDEA–substance use relationship is unknown. Method: Data are from a longitudinal study of acculturation and health among Hispanics in California (N = 1,065). Multivariable regression models assessed the a...

A logic model for educator-level intervention research to reduce racial disparities in student suspension and expulsion.
We describe how an integrated approach to supporting all children’s constitutional right to a free public education, which is prevented by exclusionary discipline practices, must purposefully integrate social and emotional learning, classroom management, cultural competence, and racial equity approaches that target educators. Together, the integration of these approaches has the potential to impact initial, intermediate, and long-term education outcomes by enhancing educators’ practices and raising awareness of their internal and interpersonal biases and role in perpetuating institutional racism in education. We conclu...

Immigration-related arrest, parental documentation status, and depressive symptoms among early adolescent Latinos.
Conclusions: The study findings suggest that there are significant consequences for youth well-being when a family member is arrested for immigration-related violations. Further, among youth whose parents are both undocumented, there appears to be a compounding effect on mental health. Immigration policies, programs, and schools need to consider the emotional needs of youth who have undocumented parents, particularly in the context of elevated immigration enforcement. “A lot of us have a very difficult time reconciling what being Muslim is”: A phenomenological study on the meaning of being Muslim American.
Conclusions: Our findings capture the complexities of what it means to be Muslim American, particularly given the heterogeneity within the community. Islamophobia contextualized their meaning-making process by perpetuating group homogeneity as the problem and solution. Clinical and research implications highlight the need to recognize intersectionality and systemic oppression as part of the identity negotiation. Pressures from within and outside of the community converged to impede participants’ feelings of cultural belongingness and identity exploration. Native Americans resolve alcohol use disorder: “Whatever it takes or all that it takes”.
Conclusions: NAs resolved AUD via multiple methods and efforts. What worked for one individual did not necessarily work the first time or for another individual. Although some motivators or actions were unique to NAs, others were similar to findings in the general population. Because multiple and varied motivations and actions may be required to resolve AUD, individuals with AUD and their loved ones should persevere in their efforts to make positive changes. Future research should examine other NA tribal regions and NA remission from drug use disorder. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: C...

Racial/ethnic differences in caregivers’ perceptions of the need for and utilization of adolescent psychological counseling and support services.
Conclusions: Black caregivers may perceive mentoring programs as a less stigmatizing and more culturally congruent support service for addressing externalizing problems. Integration and dissemination of evidence-based intervention strategies to underserved populations using culturally acceptable intervention modalities is needed. Collective ethnic–racial identity and health outcomes among African American youth: Examination of promotive and protective effects.
Conclusions: These findings highlight the importance of examining collective ethnic–racial identity and the promotive effect it can have on health outcomes for African Americans. More research is needed to better understand if there are health outcomes in which collective ethnic–racial identity may also mitigate risk as a consequence of racial discrimination. Depressive symptoms in Latina mothers in an emerging immigrant community.
Conclusions: These findings indicate that it is important to examine how cultural stressors may have differential impact for youth and their parents; thus, more work should examine the impact of acculturative-based family conflict for Latina mothers. Trajectories of racial and gender health disparities during later midlife: Connections to personality.
Conclusions: Race and gender influence health trajectories. Most personality– health associations replicated across race and gender, except for agreeableness with physical health. An intersectional framework considering more than one aspect of social identity is crucial for understanding health disparities. Future studies may benefit from including large, diverse samples of participants and further examining the moderating effects of race and gender on personality associations with a variety of health outcomes. “Never give up. Fight for what you believe in”: Perceptions of how Latina/o adolescents can make a difference.
Conclusions: Assessment of Latina/o youth civic engagement should be expanded to better reflect Latina/o youth agency, contributions, and assets. In particular, educational persistence and cultural pride may be seen as forms of resistance reflective of sociopolitical civic engagement (Checkoway & Aldana, 2013). Responses manifest components of the developmental asset of critical consciousness. Schools and communities should recognize, affirm, and support the pathways by which Latina/o youth contribute and build their efficacy for such engagement. My strong, Black daughter: Racial/ethnic differences in the attributes mothers value for their daughters.

Perceived discrimination south of the equator: Reassessing the Brazilian Explicit Discrimination Scale.
Conclusions: As well as demonstrating that discrimination may be structured by proximal, medial, and distal experiences with mistreatment, we suggest that the EDS has the potential to enhance research on the intersectional health impacts of discrimination. Future studies are required to assess scalability and provide scholars with a shortened version of the instrument.
