Desensitization and Violent Video Games
Desensitization, the reduction of cognitive, emotional, and/or behavioral responses to a stimulus, is an automatic and unconscious phenomenon often experienced in everyday life. Exposure to violent media, especially violent video games, may cause desensitization to real-life violence. Desensitization to violence blocks empathy which is needed to trigger the moral reasoning process that triggers prosocial responding. Representative research was reviewed to examine links between exposure to violent video games and desensitization to violence in children and adolescents. It was concluded that exposure to violent video games i...

Social Media as It Interfaces with Psychosocial Development and Mental Illness in Transitional-Age Youth
Social media (SM) can be defined as “a group of Internet-based applications that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content.” This includes formation of online communities and sharing of information, ideas, opinions, messages, images, and videos. Therefore, although all online video games would not necessarily count as SM, video games that allow for substantial sharing of information and development of online communities do fit this definition. SM has become an integral component of how people worldwide connect with friends and family, share personal content, and obtain news and entertainment. Use of SM ...

Social and Relational Health Risks and Common Mental Health Problems Among US Children
Nearly 70% (67.6%) of US children with mental, emotional, and behavioral problems (MEB) experienced significant social health risks (SHR) and/or relational health risks (RHR). Shifts are needed in child mental health promotion, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment to address both RHR and SHR. Public health approaches are needed that engage families, youth, and the range of child-serving professionals in collaborative efforts to prevent and mitigate RHR and SHR and promote positive mental health at a community level. Building strong family resilience and connection may improve SR and, in turn, academic and social outcomes a...

Childhood Trauma and Psychosis
Significant evidence suggests strong links between childhood trauma and psychosis, with childhood trauma considered a significant risk factor for psychosis, causing a more severe presentation of psychotic illness with a dose-response effect. The relationship between anxiety, mood, posttraumatic stress disorder, and childhood trauma and psychosis and the difficulties distinguishing between overlapping symptoms require careful attention of the treating clinician considering the presentation and treatment course. Finally, there also appears to be a link between childhood trauma and violent behavior in individuals with psychot...

School-Based Interventions for Elementary School Students with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder experience significant academic, social, and behavioral impairments in elementary school settings. Although psychopharmacologic treatments can improve symptomatic behaviors, these rarely are sufficient for enhancing school performance. Thus, medication should be supplemented by one or more school interventions, including behavioral strategies, academic interventions, behavioral peer interventions, organizational skills training, and self-regulation strategies. Although all of these school interventions have been found effective, classroom behavioral strategies, organiz...

Mental Health Care of Detained Youth Within Juvenile Detention Facilities
Mental health treatment of juvenile offenders and undocumented immigrant youth in detention provides a unique opportunity for treatment providers. Although the work may be challenging, the clinical needs and opportunities for early and meaningful interventions are significant. One of the best clinical experiences a psychiatrist can have is working with extremely high-risk youth to help them find safer and better developmental pathways. Few settings can offer such an opportunity to leverage clinical skills to improve the lives and futures of children and adolescents as are afforded to those professionals lucky enough to wor...
