Striving for Equity in Community Mental Health: Opportunities and Challenges for Integrating Care for BIPOC Youth
Supporting the mental health of youth who identify as Black, Indigenous, or Persons of Color (BIPOC) continues to be a challenge for clinicians and policymakers alike. Children and adolescents are a vulnerable population, and for BIPOC youth, these vulnerabilities are magnified by the effects of structural, interpersonal, and internalized racism. Integration of psychiatric care into other medical settings has emerged as an evidence-based method to improve access to psychiatric care, but to bridge the gap experienced by BIPOC youth, care must extend beyond medical settings to other child-focused sectors, including local gov...

Racial Disparities in the Education System
Data from the US Department of Education clearly documents the chronic and persistent disproportionality of negative educational outcomes for students of color. To move closer to an antiracist system that provides all youth with the resources, protections, and opportunities to which they are entitled through public education, we recommend that mental health clinicians understand the social determinants of education; become familiar with the historical legacy of inequity in schools; identify current trends of racial disparities in education; engage in opportunities for antiracist school transformation; and reflect on their ...

Suicide and Suicidal Behaviors Among Minoritized Youth
Suicide rates continue to increase among children and adolescents in the United States, with suicide remaining the second leading cause of death for youth aged 10 to 24  years of age. Most studies of suicide among children and adolescents have not focused on youth of color because of research suggesting that suicide was a health threat for white youth. Research showing shifting trends in suicide for minoritized youth of color has increased national focus, revealin g disparities in recognition and treatment of suicidal behaviors for racially and culturally diverse youth. Parenting and Family-Based Care
Children rely heavily on their parents for guidance and support throughout development. When parental support is hindered by racial discrimination, poverty, trauma, and acculturative family distancing, barriers to a child ’s success are cultivated. It is imperative that providers of children and families address racial and cultural concerns in a humble, curious manner. Cultural adaptations to family-based care can lead to stronger outcomes with families. (Source: Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinics of North America)

Framework for Understanding and Addressing Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Children ’s Mental Health
In this framework, we synthesize the results of studies addressing racial/ethnic disparities in children ’s mental health through 4 domains hypothesized to impact minoritized children and their families: (1) policies, (2) institutional systems, (3) neighborhoods/community system, and (4) individual/family-level factors. We focus on children and adolescents, presenting findings that may impact mental health outcomes for major racial/ethnic groups in North America: Black/African American, Latinx, Asian, and American Indian youth. We conclude by suggesting areas for needed research, including whether certain domains of infl...

Focusing on Racial, Historical and Intergenerational Trauma, and Resilience
Research across populations demonstrates that intergenerational trauma can have lasting biological, psychological, and social consequences and affects groups of individuals in different ways. An appreciation of intergenerational trauma as experienced in diverse populations is important not only for understanding vulnerabilities and risk but also for cultivating opportunities for posttraumatic growth and healing. Understanding the contexts of trauma for children and families and the unveiling of structural inequities, both past and present, offers the opportunity to address these in using clinical and systems of care approa...
