Functional Outcome of Hemorrhagic Transformation after Thrombolysis for Ischemic Stroke: A Prospective Study
Conclusion: HT after thrombolysis is very frequent on SWI, but the initial stroke severity is an important predictor to assess the role of HT for patient outcome.Cerebrovasc Dis Extra 2015;5:103-106 (Source: Cerebrovascular Diseases Extra)

Sex Differences in Long-Term Survival after a First Stroke with Intravenous Thrombolysis: Ebrictus Study
Conclusions: The stroke death rates were lower in women after thrombolysis treatment and suggest significant benefit for women in this setting. The overall benefit on survival of the patients treated with thrombolysis might be explained by the beneficial effect of the thrombolysis on the women.Cerebrovasc Dis Extra 2015;5:95-102 (Source: Cerebrovascular Diseases Extra)

Periprocedural Risk of Stroke Is Elevated in Patients with End-Stage Renal Disease on Hemodialysis
Conclusions: Of all patients with ESRD on HD admitted to the stroke service over the study period, over one third (38.3%) had the onset of their ischemic event during or shortly after HD, and nearly one quarter (23.5%) had the onset during HD. While clinicians may be tempted to attribute neurologic changes after HD to metabolic etiologies, they should also be aware that HD represents a period of elevated risk for acute ischemia.Cerebrovasc Dis Extra 2015;5:91-94 (Source: Cerebrovascular Diseases Extra)

Clinical Characteristics of Transient Ischemic Attack Patients with Atrial Fibrillation: Analyses of a Multicenter Retrospective Study
Conclusions: In this study, 17% of our TIA patients had AF. We found an association between the acute ischemic lesion pattern on DWI of a single lesion ≥15 mm and AF in TIA patients. These results might lead to a better diagnosis of TIA patients with AF.Cerebrovasc Dis Extra 2015;5:84-90 (Source: Cerebrovascular Diseases Extra)

Endothelial Repair in Childhood Arterial Ischaemic Stroke with Cerebral Arteriopathy
Conclusions: Children with recurrent AIS and cerebral arteriopathy had increased circulating CD34+/KDR+ cells and BDNF consistent with an endothelial repair response. However, EPC function was impaired. Future studies are needed to examine whether suboptimal endothelial repair contributes to childhood AIS recurrence.Cerebrovasc Dis Extra 2015;5:68-74 (Source: Cerebrovascular Diseases Extra)

Short Door-to-Needle Times in Acute Ischemic Stroke and Prospective Identification of Its Delaying Factors
Conclusions: Short median DNTs can also be accomplished in secondary care. Despite the short DNTs, several delaying factors were identified that could direct future improvement measures. This study supports the view that as a performance measure, the current DNT targets are no longer ambitious enough and it adds to the knowledge of factors delaying the DNT.Cerebrovasc Dis Extra 2015;5:75-83 (Source: Cerebrovascular Diseases Extra)

Plasma Catecholamine Profile of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Patients with Neurogenic Cardiomyopathy
Conclusions: Following SAH, the development of NC is primarily related to elevated plasma NE levels. Findings implicate a predominantly neurogenic process mediated by neuronal NE (and not adrenal EPI), but cannot exclude synergy between the catecholamines.Cerebrovasc Dis Extra 2015;5:57-67 (Source: Cerebrovascular Diseases Extra)

Cerebral Microbleeds and White Matter Hyperintensities in Cognitively Healthy Elderly: A Cross-Sectional Cohort Study Evaluating the Effect of Arterial Stiffness
Conclusions: Arterial stiffness was not associated with the presence of cerebral microbleeds or cognitive function in cognitively healthy elderly. However, arterial stiffness was related to the presence of WMH, but the association was attenuated when multiple adjustments were made. There was a weak negative association between WMH and performance in one specific test of attention. Longitudinal follow-up studies are needed to further assess the associations.Cerebrovasc Dis Extra 2015;5:41-51 (Source: Cerebrovascular Diseases Extra)

Early Mobilization in Ischemic Stroke: A Pilot Randomized Trial of Safety and Feasibility in a Public Hospital in Brazil
Conclusions: This pilot trial conducted at a public hospital in Brazil suggests that early mobilization after acute ischemic stroke is safe and feasible. Despite some challenges and limitations, early mobilization was successfully implemented, even in the setting of a large, complex ED, and without complications. Patients from the IG were mobilized much earlier than controls receiving the standard care provided in most Brazilian hospitals.Cerebrovasc Dis Extra 2015;5:31-40 (Source: Cerebrovascular Diseases Extra)

Stroke-Like Presentation of Cerebral Toxoplasmosis: Two HIV-Infected Cases
Toxoplasmosis is the most common opportunistic infection of the central nervous system in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Clinical presentation of cerebral toxoplasmosis in these patients includes headache, focal neurological deficits and seizures. Prompt diagnosis and appropriate therapy results in rapid clinical and radiological improvement as well as good outcome for patients. In this article, we report two cases with stroke-like presentation of cerebral toxoplasmosis in the setting of HIV infection.Cerebrovasc Dis Extra 2015;5:28-30 (Source: Cerebrovascular Diseases Extra)

Accuracy of Reporting the Hyperdense Middle Cerebral Artery Sign as a Function of Clinical Experience
Conclusions: Experienced neurologists and radiologists consistently and accurately reported the presence or absence of HMCAS, whereas less experienced clinicians tended to over-report the presence of HMCAS. This may have implications for the acute management of thromboembolic stroke.Cerebrovasc Dis Extra 2015;5:14-20 (Source: Cerebrovascular Diseases Extra)
