Unilateral Sensorineural Hearing Loss: Medical Context and Etiology
Conclusion: Long-term hearing follow-up remains useful in USNHL as it can become bilateral. Looking to etiology, MRI should be the gold standard, as CND is frequently observed and screening for CMV infection should be systematic. Genetic etiologies appear to be different compared to bilateral HL. Further genetic research in this domain is needed.Audiol Neurotol 2017;22:83-88 (Source: Audiology and Neurotology)

Patient-Related Benefits for Adults with Cochlear Implantation: A Multicultural Longitudinal Observational Study
Objectives: To assess subjectively perceived, real-world benefits longitudinally for unilateral cochlear implant (CI) recipients in a multinational population treated routinely. To identify possible predictors of self-reported benefits.Design: This was a prospective, multicenter, repeated-measures study. Self-assessment of performance at preimplantation and postimplantation at 1, 2, and 3 years using standardized, validated, local language versions of the Speech, Spatial, and Qualities of Hearing Scale (SSQ), and the Health Utilities Index Mark 3 (HUI3) was performed. Outcomes were analyzed using a longitudinal mixed-effec...

Influence of Sex and Age on Posterior Semicircular Canal Thickness
Conclusions: PSC thickness did not significantly evolve with age in young males ( ≤45 years) but it decreased from age 45 years onwards. On the other hand, PCS thickness increased with age in women until the age of 45 years and it did not significantly change in older females.Audiol Neurotol 2017;22:56-59 (Source: Audiology and Neurotology)

The Crista Fenestra and Its Impact on the Surgical Approach to the Scala Tympani during Cochlear Implantation
Conclusion: The crista fenestra occupies a variable but expressive area within the bony round window niche. Narrower round window niches tended to house smaller crests. The presence of the crista fenestra is an important obstacle to adequate access to the scala tympani. Nevertheless, a high-resolution CT scan provides no additional preoperative information with regard to its presence for the purpose of surgical access to the scala tympani via the round window niche.Audiol Neurotol 2017;22:50-55 (Source: Audiology and Neurotology)
