Cochlear Implantation and Other Treatments in Single-Sided Deafness and Asymmetric Hearing Loss: Results of a National Multicenter Study Including a Randomized Controlled Trial
Conclusion: Cochlear implantation leads to significant improvements in quality of life in SSD and AHL patients, particularly in subjects with associated severe tinnitus, who are thereby the best candidates to an extension of CI indications.Audiol Neurotol (Source: Audiology and Neurotology)

High Blood Glucose Levels Affect Auditory Brainstem Responses after Acoustic Overexposure in Rats
Conclusions: We found that high blood glucose levels increased peak 1 amplitudes without changing the hearing threshold. Diabetic rats were less resilient in threshold changes and were less vulnerable to peak 1 amplitude and synaptic damage than control animals.Audiol Neurotol (Source: Audiology and Neurotology)

Differences between Pressurized and Non-Pressurized Transient-Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions in Neonatal Subjects
Conclusion: The pressurized TEOAE protocol generates responses with higher S/Ns which might be useful in borderline cases where the middle ear status might cause a REFER screening outcome.Audiol Neurotol (Source: Audiology and Neurotology)

Long-Term Follow-Up of Early Cochlear Implant Device Activation
Conclusions: Early fitting of the sound processor is a feasible and safe procedure with comparable follow-up effort. Although more early minor complications were observed in the EF, there were no long-term wound healing problems caused by the early fitting. Regular inspection of the magnet strength is recommended as part of the CI follow-up since postoperative wound swelling must be expected. The early fitting procedure enabled a clear reduction in the waiting time between CI surgery and initial sound processor activation.Audiol Neurotol (Source: Audiology and Neurotology)

Association between Speech Recognition in Noise and Risk Factors of Cardiovascular Disease
Conclusion: Obesity, RA, and hypertension were overall associated with a higher SRT, but no longitudinal associations between these or other CVD factors with SRTs were found. Also, no interactions between 2 CVD risk factors and SRTs were found. Although no longitudinal associations between CVD risk factors and decline in SRTs were found, clinicians should be alert about the concurrent association between CVD risk factors and hearing loss.Audiol Neurotol (Source: Audiology and Neurotology)

A New Stapes-Head Coupler for the Vibrant Soundbridge System
Conclusions: The new SH coupler provides an alternative with more stable fixation when placement of the current Vibroplasty Clip coupler is limited due to insufficient space after canal-wall-down mastoidectomy, while still delivering effective stimuli to the cochlea.Audiol Neurotol (Source: Audiology and Neurotology)

Minimizing Intracochlear Pressure: Influence of the Insertion Sheath
Conclusion: Modification of the insertion sheath leads to lower intracochlear pressure gain. The differences and impact on intracochlear pressure changes found in this study underline the importance of even subtle modifications of the electrode insertion technique.Audiol Neurotol (Source: Audiology and Neurotology)

Realistic Environment Audiometric Booth: Development and Clinical Validation
Conclusions: We have developed and validated a new audiological testing method that enables hearing ability to be assessed in listening conditions similar to those found in real life. The REAB complements the tests performed in CBs, thereby aiding the diagnostic process by reproducing acoustic and visual scenarios that conventional tests do not offer.Audiol Neurotol (Source: Audiology and Neurotology)

An Evaluation of the Relationship between Retinal Nerve Fiber Thickness, Cochlear Nerve Thickness, the Level of Tinnitus, and Hearing Loss in Unilateral Tinnitus Patients
Conclusion: The study results clearly showed a relationship between cochlear nerve fiber thickness and hearing loss and the severity of tinnitus in cases with unilateral tinnitus and that there could be neurodegenerative factors in the disease etiology. A similar relationship seen with the RNFL supports the study hypothesis.Audiol Neurotol (Source: Audiology and Neurotology)

Unexplained Variation in Benefit of Treatment of Congenital Unilateral Aural Atresia: A Review of the Literature
Conclusions: Treatment of UCHL results in bilateral hearing instead of binaural hearing. The large intersubject variability in benefit of treatment is unexplained with a clear improvement in the minority of listeners and a limited improvement or binaural interference in most listeners after atresia repair or amplification with a BCD or MEI.Audiol Neurotol (Source: Audiology and Neurotology)

Social Support and Tinnitus Distress: The Importance of Developing Positive Psychological Qualities in Patients with Chronic Tinnitus
Conclusion: These results suggested that the key to social support for alleviating tinnitus distress lies in the development of patients ’ resilience and self-esteem. Promoting the development of positive psychological quality of tinnitus patients and improving their perception of social support may become the new approaches of clinical management of tinnitus.Audiol Neurotol (Source: Audiology and Neurotology)

The Possible Role of Sclerostin in the Pathogenesis of Tympanosclerosis
Conclusion: The upregulated expression level of SOST may be involved in the formation of TS, first, through the pro-phosphorylation of ERK1/2 in the inflammatory stage, and then through the enhancement of Wnt3a in the osteogenic stage.Audiol Neurotol (Source: Audiology and Neurotology)

Children with Auditory Brainstem Implant: How Do They Perform in Motor and Language Skills?
Conclusion: The current study has indicated that significantly poor manual and balance performances are associated with poor speech perception and language skills in children with ABI. The authors recommend performing a vestibular assessment before and after ABI surgery and the use of a holistic rehabilitation approach, including auditory and vestibular rehabilitation, to support development of the children with ABI.Audiol Neurotol (Source: Audiology and Neurotology)
