Review of the pharmacological properties of marine macroalgae used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus in Indonesia
This study provides a comprehensive dataset of pharmacological antidiabetic potential of marine macroalgae used for managing DM and reports on preclinical trials that provide pharmacological evidence. Data on the Indonesian marine macroalgae used to lower blood glucose were obtained from online sources. The bioactive chemicals of marine macroalgae have been found efficient at blocking several diabetes enzymes in in-vivo and in-vitro studies, and such chemicals have anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, antioxidant, and other therapeutic benefits. The Google Scholar was used to search for the pharmacological literature with the ...

Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is described by too much hepatic fat deposition causing steatosis, which further develops into nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), defined by necroinflammation and fibrosis, progressing further to hepatic cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver failure. NAFLD is linked to different aspects of the metabolic syndrome like obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, and its pathogenesis involves several elements including diet, obesity, disruption o...

Unfractionned heparin wastage at a French university hospital.
CONCLUSION: More than a quarter of the heparin purchased is wasted. The results should lead to policy decisions concerning the medications supply chain, i.e. abandoning the 20000UI/48mL protocol, supply of ready to use heparin syringes by industry or by the pharmacy. It is essential that these data be fed back to nurses teams, in order to gather their suggestions before considering any changes of their practices.PMID:38340805 | DOI:10.1016/j.pharma.2024.02.002 (Source: Annales Pharmaceutiques Francaises)

The cost of multiple myeloma and its complications: a single-center study from Oran, Algeria
CONCLUSION: A number of adjustments have been implemented to the management of MM over time to improve clinical efficacy and reduce costs in Algeria. However, this may have come with a startlingly high cost of complications.PMID:38340806 | DOI:10.1016/j.pharma.2024.02.001 (Source: Annales Pharmaceutiques Francaises)

Solubilization of drugs using beta-cyclodextrin: Experimental data and modeling
In this study, the solubility enhancement of some drugs in the presence of 10 mM βCD at 25°C was experimentally determined or collected from the literature. Two different models to predict the solubilization by βCD were developed by binary logistic regression using structural properties of drugs with more than 80% accuracy. Polar surface area and excess molar refraction are the main parameters for estimating solubilization by βCD. Moreover, other descriptors related to hydrophobicity and the capability of hydrogen bonding formation of molecules could improve the accuracy of the established models.PMID:38340807 | DOI:10...

Antioxidant and cytotoxicity activity of a nanoemulsion from Satureja kermanica (Lamiaceae)
CONCLUSION: MSK and NEK showed antioxidant and cytotoxic activity, but in NEK, the antioxidant and cytotoxic potential of the plant was more prominent, which may be due to the rapid release of the bioactive component from the nanoemulsion.PMID:38280447 | DOI:10.1016/j.pharma.2024.01.005 (Source: Annales Pharmaceutiques Francaises)

Adopting video assignments as a tool to improve first-year pharmacy students class engagement
CONCLUSIONS: The video assignment tool was successfully used to provide immediate feedback to a large class in a pharmaceutical calculations course. The students were in favor of the video assignment compared to traditional paper assignments. This finding could encourage other instructors to assess the benefit of implementing such tools in other pharmacy courses.PMID:38244677 | DOI:10.1016/j.pharma.2024.01.003 (Source: Annales Pharmaceutiques Francaises)

Antibacterial agents and the fight against antibiotic resistance: A real-world evidence analysis of consumption and spending by an Italian healthcare company
CONCLUSION: This real-world evidence analysis aimed to support the justified and comprehensible global concerns regarding bacterial resistance. The extensive consumption of antibiotics will inevitably lead to the development of increasingly drug-resistant bacteria for which no antibiotic may be efficacious. National programs addressing antibiotic resistance and the awareness of all healthcare personnel must be accorded the utmost priority to enhance consumption data and, consequently, safeguard future human survival.PMID:38218426 | DOI:10.1016/j.pharma.2024.01.001 (Source: Annales Pharmaceutiques Francaises)

Chronic kidney disease in America, Africa, and Asia: Overview of treatment cost and options
Ann Pharm Fr. 2024 Jan 11:S0003-4509(24)00002-6. doi: 10.1016/j.pharma.2024.01.002. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the non-infectious diseases that threaten patients' lives on a daily basis. Its prevalence is high, but under-reported by patients and those living with the disease, as it is silent and asymptomatic in the early stages. Kidney disease increases the risk of heart and vascular disease. These problems can manifest themselves slowly, over a long period of time. Early detection and treatment can often prevent chronic kidney disease from worsening. As kidney disease progresses, ...
