CCOM vs UQ-Ochsner
Hello! I’m deciding between CCOM and UQ-Ochsner for med school. Stats: 510 MCAT, 3.4 undergrad GPA, 3.79 grad GPA (MPH). I’m interested in general surgery, plastics, otolaryngology, derm, and ob gyn, but plan to go in with an open mind in regard to specialty. I want to eventually work in the field of global health (either as a physician consultant for an NGO or just volunteer abroad). Tuition for CCOM is 78k, UQ-O is 68k plus health insurance and travel. CCOM Pros Remain in same... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

1 year WFH and feeling isolated - what would you do ?
Hello, guys, in some other threads , I’ve mentioned that I worked retail for 9 years and left last April . It took me 2 months to find a new position and since then I’ve been WFH for an insurance company/PBM doing patient consultation taking calls everyday for 8 hours a day . In this position, I use more of my knowledge and interact with patients addressing their pharmaceutical concerns - it is essentially a call center job. At first, I really looked forward to this role working from home... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Unexpected time off--what to do?
Hello, all-- I'm a long-time SDN user, but created a throwaway as there are personal details here. I'm an early career psychiatrist. Employed for 3 years, then this year (after getting married, feeling good about savings, securing health insurance, and feeling more secure with my partner's income), took the leap to start a small cash-pay PP. I got a part-time job as a medical director for an IOP (1099) which paid well and made me less nervous about the finances. Several weeks ago, I was... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Taking Insurance
So I took the plunge and applied to several insurance panels: Aetna, BCBSTX, Cigna, United Healthcare, Humana, and Beacon. Interestingly enough, I was fully approved and became paneled with United in like 2 weeks, and I am almost done being paneled with Cigna. My biggest hang up has been with BCBSTX who rejected my application because my W-9 was incorrect, so I re-submitted the application. It is challenging getting to know my status with them honestly. I haven't heard a peep from Aetna... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Bay Area insurance reimbursements?
Curious if anyone in the bay area can share their average insurance reimbursements for the common codes. Other places in California would also be appreciated too. Thanks. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Charging for talking to therapist
In an insurance based practice do you think it's reasonable/possible to charge for phone calls that are conducted with a patient's therapist at a different location? I understand that sometimes it's necessary for coordination of care but also many times, patients or therapists request to speak with the psychiatrist by default, even if I have limited concerns about how the treatment is progressing. It's just very difficult that patients expect you to carve out time in your schedule that... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Advice needed: starting work as 1099, what do I need to do?
Hey folks, I just signed onto a new gig working as an independent contractor at a new hospital. I have ZERO experience with this. For those that have gone through it, what advice do you have on how to start? Do I need to immediately find a financial advisor or a CPA or can this wait? I'm planning on starting an LLC. Do this myself or hire a professional? Do I open a business account? Look for health insurance? Man, I feel like I'm in over my head, any bits of advice or wisdom you have... Declining reimbursement
Management at my hospital system has communicated that reimbursements are declining. I knew that Medicare was paying less but they also said commercial insurance reimbursements are also declining. Is this true? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Cigna QZ modifier change
Cigna starting to reimburse 15% less for qz modifier with other insurance companies expected to follow suit… what’s everyone’s thoughts on this? Ultimately pretty good for our profession. Wonder if the rural hospitals allowing crna only care will make a shift. More crnas moving to plastics? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Public notice: stop taking PE jobs
What do all PE practices have in common? They all need employee producers before they can churn and burn the practice to next buyer for that sweet 10x EBITDA multiplier. Ophthalmology is a small field w/ greater than 50% of workforce over 55, and if all young ophthalmologists collectively stuck together and said no to PE jobs, it would be game over. This is already happening to some degree. If young ophthalmologists banded together about tail insurance clauses and asked “partnership... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Liability Insurance
I see I've let my HPSO policy lapse. They ask a compounding question on their quote tool (that I believe is meant for retail), that if I answer truthfully renders me uninsurable. Who's everyone using these days? Proliability (Mercer) is cheaper, I can't get a quote to come through on Pharmacists Mutual. Any other recs? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Telehealth is done for?
So apparently CMS is going to require in person visit initially for all telehealth patients? And then insurance will follow? So if you can’t do an in person visit you won’t be able to do telepsych..isn’t this the death of telepsych? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Strongly considering concierge
Please spare me the ethical side of things. I love what I do and would do it for free. Traditional Primary care is getting gobbled up by corporate medicine and the trend will only continue. I have been absorbed in to the machine. They’re buying up the entire town, which had previously been a fantastic smaller town medical community with specialists ready to see all patients regardless of insurance. Im forced in to at least 3-5 new patients a day, on top of my already unmanageable census... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
