employee insurance costs for PP docs
The ortho practice in which I will become a full partner in January, is self insured and the CEO assures me that this is cheaper than paying the typical employer portion of insurance premiums. I'm not convinced of this when I see how much I've paid out for that portion of the overhead over the past year. It is a large ortho practice, but I"m still not convinced of this as the practice paid well over a million dollars in medical expenses for the employees this year while being "self insured"... Mandatory School Health Insurance during Clinical Years?
I recently found out that my school requires all students to purchase health insurance through the school for 3rd and 4th years, with the only exceptions being if you have a pre-existing health condition that would be adversely impacted by a change in insurance. Failure to do so results in removal from rotations. Is this commonplace at other schools? What are my options? I'm pretty upset and blindsided by this as I had to find it out about it via word of mouth from upper classmen. I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Need advice with authorizations and scheduling.
1. When do you schedule patients with non-Medicare insurance? (After auth obtained or do you pre-emptively book them ~10-14 days in advance?) 2. How do I learn which cases need auth vs not? 3. “Urgent” cases like a blood patch- do I need auth for these? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Private practice volume
I’m wondering if there’s someone with experience in private practice who can comment on pay rates. I’m just entering the adult job market. I see that colonoscopy is 3.4 RVU and Medicare pays $34 per RVU. How can private practice afford to pay the rates I’m seeing, typically greater than 500k? Are people really doing 20-30 colonoscopies a day in private practice? Does private insurance pay more per RVU? I feel like I’m missing something. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Insurance Rates, HelloAlma, and Other Private Practice Questions!
Hi all! I'm a (fortunate) postdoc working in New York City in a private pay, group practice with relatively good compensation, benefits, and work-life balance. Although I enjoy the work, the owner of the practice takes too-much of my income so I would like to start my own practice. I get to transfer my caseload over when I start (yay!), and would like to hear other peoples' opinions/experiences. First, I'm interested in signing up with HelloAlma--the consultant I spoke with mentioned that... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Disposable nasopharyngoscopes
Our clinic is looking into disposable options for nasopharyngoscopes for head/neck patients. Is there a brand that you like? I heard that the scopes can be charged to the patient's insurance company. What codes do you use when billing for the scopes? Thanks! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Employment benefits - written in contract?
Hi I am reviewing a physician employment contract from a large group and they don’t mention medical insurance as a benefit in the contract. They have a brochure with multiple options from a national carrier. Is this something I need to be concerned about? It seems strange not to include it as a benefit in writing.
