What Ohio's 20-Week Abortion Ban Law Will Really Mean For Women
Ohio just became the 18th state to pass an arbitrary ban on abortions after 20 weeks.  The new law, which Gov. John Kasich (R) signed Tuesday, outlaws an extremely rare procedure. Only about 1 percent of all abortions take place after 20 weeks, and most are the result of doctors finding birth defects that were undetectable in earlier screenings. The ban will push women to travel out of state if they discover a serious defect during a second trimester ultrasound, adding another layer of logistical and financial difficulty to an already complicated termination procedure, says Dr. Jennifer K. Hsia, a clini...

Research identifies a molecular basis for common congenital brain defect
A molecular cause of hydrocephalus, a common, potentially life-threatening birth defect in which the head is enlarged due to excess fluid surrounding the brain, has now been discovered by researchers. Because the same molecule is also implicated in Down ' s syndrome, the finding may explain the ten-fold increased risk of hydrocephalus in infants born with Down ' s. (Source: ScienceDaily Headlines)

Seeing Phoenix
It seems like people have been looking at our son Phoenix — without seeing him, without talking to him — since before he was born. When I was pregnant and the ultrasound showed severe spina bifida and kyphosis (an excessive forward curve in his spine), the specialist told us he had never seen a spine like Phoenix’s. He wasn’t sure how it could be treated and recommended terminating my pregnancy. My husband Mike and I chose not to. Phoenix was born on June 29, 2009, with a lesion at the base of his spine. His spinal cord and nerves were exposed, so his first surgery was a skin graft to cover the lesion. On top of sp...

How One Family Is Bringing Attention To Hydrocephalus
It is hard enough to support a seriously ill child through a devastating and poorly understood illness. But it is quite another thing to start an organization devoted to raising money to publicize the disease and raise money for research. (Source: Forbes.com Healthcare News)

Alcyone Lifesciences seeks FDA nod for ReFlow neuro cath
Alcyone Lifesciences is seeking formal commercial approval for its device to treat fluid buildup in the brain, following its successful implant in 4 patients in an ongoing study at Boston Children’s Hospital. Staying ontop of hydrocephalus shunt failure with ShuntCheck
Antonio Venus-Reeve, 14, had his first shunt surgery for hydrocephalus when he was 2½ months old. Born at 25 weeks’ gestation, weighing less than two pounds, he had a serious brain bleed seven days later. As Antonio’s head began to swell with excess fluid, neurologists at Boston Children’s Hospital told his mother, Joanne Venus-Williams, that Antonio probably would not be able to walk, talk or develop major motor skills. “Neurosurgery got involved and the team did daily spinal taps to draw out the fluid in his brain,” says Venus-Williams. “They were hoping he wouldn’t need a shunt, but we got to the point w...
