Congenital cytomegalovirus infection in a preterm infant with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and immunological abnormalities
We report a case of a preterm infant with congenital cytomegalovirus infection complicated with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and immunological abnormalities. Ultrasonography revealed pulmonary atresia, ventricular septal defect, major aortopulmonary collateral artery, and thymic hypoplasia. His serum chemistry tests on admission revealed immunoglobulin G, A, and M levels of 1,547 mg/dL, 70 mg/dL, and 274 mg/dL, respectively. A surface antigen analysis of the peripheral lymphocytes using flow cytometry revealed the following: relatively low CD4-positive T-cell levels (18.1%; 1,767/μL), very high CD8-positive T-cell levels (58...

Cardiovascular physical examination as a screening tool for congenital heart disease in newborns at a teaching hospital in Ghana
CONCLUSION: Cardiovascular physical examination at birth is an effective and inexpensive screening tool for detecting CHD in newborns, which can easily be utilised in low-resource settings.FUNDING: None declared.PMID:38504760 | PMC:PMC10846649 | DOI:10.4314/gmj.v57i2.10 (Source: Ghana Medical Journal)

Holy
Born with four grandmothers, half of them Jewish, on Hitler ’s birthday, Emma’s echocardiogram showed three septal defects when she was two days old. The surgeon said it was the problem you’d pray for, well-nourished babies even grow out of it, and the likely surgery’s low-risk. I didn’t tell my son (her father) this means one surgical death in twe nty. Our only prayers had been for her birth on another date. (Source: JAMA - Journal of the American Medical Association)

CHARGE syndrome with early fetal ear abnormalities: A case report
We report a fetus with fetal external ear abnormality detected by ultrasound at 22nd week of gestation. Postnatal examination revealed an external ear abnormality, a mild atrial septal defect, and other clinical signs of CHARGE syndrome. A de novo pathogenic nonsense mutation in theCHD7 gene (c.406C  >  T, p.Q136X in exon 2) was identified to cause the disorder. Our study demonstrated that prenatal diagnosis and genetic testing were recommended to obtain a solid diagnosis of CHARGE syndrome when fetal external ear abnormality was detected by ultrasound examination.
