Friday Feature: Boone Prairie School
Colleen HroncichLike many newer educational options,Boone Prairie School began because parents were looking for something different for their own child. “My husband and I started the school because we were looking for an option for our son,” recalls Shawna Reinhardt. “My daughter was in a hybrid type option and my son was not really interested in learning. I was looking at what their options were going to be for him when he started school— we homeschooled him for the first two years. And I just needed something where he’d be able to be hands‐on and able to get up and go outside for recess a couple of ti...

Digital Front Doors: Unlocking Healthcare ’ s New Frontier
Digital front door solutions are a growing phenomenon in healthcare. The topic caught my attention a while ago when I stumbled upon a study discussing how a new concept – the digital front door – could address the challenges the primary care system faces in the UK. With my curiosity piqued, I decided to dive deeper into this topic. As this is a concept I have encountered increasingly often and one that’s changing the way we access healthcare services, I recently created a short video attempting to define this trend in less than one minute. But as this phenomenon will have profound effects on the future...

Friday Feature: Gather Forest School
Colleen HroncichOn average, kids today reportedly spend fewer than10 minutes a day playing outside —and more than seven hours a day on screens. That ’s one of the reasons I love learning about forest schools, likeThe Garden School,Barefoot University, and today ’s feature,Gather in Decatur, Georgia.A former teacher, Ashley Causey ‐Golden was caring for her newborn son and trying to figure out her next move. She didn’t want to put him in daycare when he was so young, so she decided to try creating her own school. Ashley had interacted with Shelby Stone‐Steel on Instagram through As...

Rising Healthcare Costs: How Health Plans Can Help Members Navigate
The following is a guest article by Jake Sattelmair, EVP and General Manager at Wellframe, a HealthEdge company Healthcare costs are on the rise in the United States, posing significant challenges for individuals, employers, and health plans. Factors such as an aging population, an increased prevalence of chronic conditions and rising costs for medical technology and prescription drugs have all contributed to the surge in healthcare expenses. Unfortunately, these increased costs are passed on to patients, making healthcare increasingly unaffordable and inaccessible for many. According to the Average Cost of Health Insuranc...

Friday Feature: Dekalb Christian Home Educators and the Georgia Black Home Educators Network
Colleen HroncichNicole Doyle, president of theDekalb Christian Home Educators (DCHE), has a unique way of looking at parenting. “You are the architect,” she explains. “You can hire all the general contractors and subcontractors you want to. But you have to take ownership as the architect of your child’s physical, mental, spiritual, and academic growth. Because statisticts show us that parental involvement is really w hat’s pushing kids into being successful.”Nicole started homeschooling after one of her children ’s public school teachers suggested it around 10 years ago. “I started researchin...

PoliTikTok
Paul MatzkoFDR Looks Longingly at TikTok Emblem (Dall ‑E 2)Rep. Jeff Jackson (D ‑NC) went onMeet the Press and wasasked why he doesn ’t delete his TikTok account given the risk of Chinese surveillance. He responded with a paradigm‐shattering statistic: nearly a third of his constituents follow him on TikTok, where he posts weekly videos explaining the nuts and bolts of Congress. A THIRD.Contrast that with how most members of Congress still do constituent outreach. A  couple of times a year a little pamphlet shows up in my mailbox from one of my legislators. Nanoparticles Get Lymphatic Vessels Pumping
Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have developed a nanotechnological solution for lymphedema, a failure of the lymphatic system that results in uncomfortable and irreversible fluid retention. Previous research efforts have focused on trying to grow new lymphatic vessels, but these researchers have taken a different approach, and instead engineered a drug delivery technology that can directly target sluggish lymphatic vessels and kickstart their pumping action. Near infrared video demonstrating enhanced lymphatic contractile activity in model delivered drug loaded nanoparticles. To achieve this, the r...

More Cold Water Thrown on Some Alarmist Election Claims
This article is the first to tackle this important question. We examine all states’ district plans before and after th e 2020 round of redistricting at the congressional, state senate, and state house levels. Our primary finding is that there was little retrogression in formerly covered states. In sum, the number of minority ability districts in these states actually rose slightly. We also show that formerly covered states were largely indistinguishable from formerly uncovered states in terms of retrogression. If anything, states unaffected by Shelby County retrogressed marginally more than did states impacted by the rul...
