Nuclear Power Costs
Peter Van DorenTheNew Yorkerrecently published a shortarticle about environmentalists who support nuclear power because they believe it is an essential component of any strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The article discussed the risks from nuclear accidents, such as Fukushima and correctly noted that more than a thousand people died in the forced evacuation of the area, dwarfing the expected direct health effects of radiation exposure.A recentpaper extended that analysis by examining the effects of the shut ‐down of all nuclear power plants in Japan following the Fukushima accident in March 2011. ...

Could a glass of wine diagnose long COVID?
Acute COVID-19 infection ranges from no symptoms (asymptomatic) to life-threatening.   What about long COVID (the symptoms occurring more than three weeks after infection, also known as post-acute COVID syndrome)?  Could there be thousands of people with “mild” long COVID who don’t know it? Could there be legions of people with new low-energy levels being misdiagnosed […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more. As One Licensed NC Physician To Another Unlicensed One (Dr. Mary Johnson to Dr. Mandy Cohen/NC DHHS Secretary): PROTECT MEDICAL WHISTLEBLOWERS NOW!
Related to mylast post - which went up (after much soul-searching and trepidation) on 2/28/20201 one of the biggest complaints (coming largely from folks reading on mobile phones) was that the post was " so long " .  They wanted something more " concise " . The post relates my own horrific pandemic experience with Central Carolina Hospital/ApolloMD and Duke Lifepoint in Sanford, North Carolina.  It ' s my third dance as a medical whistle-blower in 23 years.  And much like the first two cases (Asheboro in 1998, and ETSU/Ballad Health in 2017), it ' s really NOT " soundbite " material (it would ...

A North Carolina Pediatric Hospitalist Tells Her Pandemic Story to Senator Richard Burr: Thirteen Months (And Counting) In Medical Whistle-blower Hell - Courtesy Of Private Equity/For-Profit Healthcare And Cruelly-Indifferent/Morally-Bankrupt State & Federal Oversight
Author ' s Note:  I cannot " sound-bite " the last year - and perhaps it ' s time to write the book. Scroll about half-way down to read the letter to Senator Burr.  The bottom line is that for thethird time in 23 years, as a Pediatrician staffing a community hospital, I was fired " with-out cause " immediately after intervening in a neonatal ( " bad baby " ) case, rescuing the situation/ " saving " the baby, and reporting it INTERNALLY to Peer Review.  NO discussion.  NO recourse.  NO review.  A total cover-up.  And EVERY SINGLE TIME I ' ve asked the state/Federal government to enfor...

Placental Allografts for Diabetic Foot Ulcers: Interview with Tim Wright, CEO of MiMedx
MiMedx, a medtech company based in Georgia, has developed EpiFix, an off-the-shelf allograft system for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. The grafts are made using donated human placental tissues that are obtained from consenting mothers during caesarean section procedures. The tissues then undergo a proprietary processing procedure to clean them and eventually produce a dehydrated graft that can be stored at room temperature long term. Diabetic foot ulcers are relatively common in patients with diabetes, presenting in as many as 15% of such patients. These wounds are stubborn and typically resistant to treatment, ...

Will Biden Repeat Trump ’s Automotive Mistakes?
Scott LincicomeThe New York Times yesterday provided anin-depth look at the Biden White House ' s plans to " transform the economy " through " dramatic interventions to revive U.S. manufacturing " - heavy on economic nationalism, industrial planning, and manufacturing jobs. If that approach sounds familiar, it should: it ' s essentially the same gameplan that Biden ' s predecessor used, with the only major difference being Biden ' s emphasis on " green " industries like wind turbines, as compared to Trump ' s love of steel and other heavy industry. Both presidents, however, seem to share a soft spot for the automotive indus...

Don ’t Let Judges Lie to Juries about Conscientious Acquittal
James CravenJuror #112 had serious reservations about the case in front of him. The defendants were each charged with no less than 42 offenses. “Do we have the right to use jury nullification of a charge? ” the juror asked. The trial court ’s answer was evasive, but the juror was insistent. “Can you answer the jury nullification with a yes or no response? ” came the second note. After the third such inquiry, the circuit judge made the following declaration:“Ladies and gentlemen of the jury you may not use, implement, or resort to jury nullification. It is improper, it’s contrary to the law [and] woul...

Few Immigrants among Capitol Insurrectionists
Alex NowrastehAs of February 1, 2021, a  total of 217 people have been arrested or charged with participating in the January 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection. Many more people will be arrested and charged in the coming months, but it’s worth looking at the demographics of this group to better understand what happened.Newresearch by professors Robert A. Pape and Keven Ruby present the age, employment status, and other demographic characteristics of the mob that attacked the Capitol. However, Pape and Ruby left out one key demographic variable: nativity. How many of the rioters were foreign ‐born? To fill this gap, my int...
