What is stigma? And how does it affect a person’s mental health and quality of life? In today’s Psych Central Podcast, Gabe talks with anthropologists Alex Brewis and Amber Wutich about the deeply dehumanizing impact of stigma in society. Whether it’s your mental health diagnosis, your neighborhood, your race or your inability to meet society’s standards in some way, stigma is alive and well in today’s world. People even tend to stigmatize themselves, intensifying their suffering.  Why are people so quick to stigmatize? And how does stigma affect mental health treatment? Longer ‐Run Impacts from Outrageous Policing Incidents
Aaron YelowitzThe past few weeks have seen broad ‐based community outrage from extremely disturbing incidents involving current or former police officers in the killing of 44‐year‐oldGeorge Floyd in Minneapolis, 26 ‐year‐oldBreonna Taylor in Louisville, and 25 ‐year‐oldAhmaud Arbery near Brunswick, Georgia. In all cases, the victims were African ‐American and the events have spotlighted the role of racism in policing. In the immediate aftermath —which exploded during the week of May 25th—there were both peaceful and violent protests, destruction of private and public property, and...

COVID-19, Georgia, and racial disparities: Do all lives still matter?
I learned to call Atlanta home after college. It was at Grady Memorial Hospital that I first shadowed doctors, and decided that I would go to medical school. Two and a half years into being an ATLien, I cried inconsolably because it was time to leave. I have since continued to yearn for the day […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more. (Source: Kevin, M.D. - Medical Weblog)

Weezy
I have a dog. She is a very sweet creature. And she is terminally ill. She has been with my wife and me for almost 6 years. We rescued her when she was not quite 2 years of age. She’d been a street dog in the Atlanta, Georgia area, she’s had puppies, and she’d been shot. But she found a home with us. When she was healthy she was a loving, happy, mischievous girl. She seemed to know whenever I was having a bad day because she would always snuggle with me without ever having to ask or be invited. And she was always welcome to do that. And she could eat. She loved her food. Ours too. She loved beef jerky, cheesebu...

We reviewed plan brochures for 12 short-term plans currently being sold in Georgia, Louisiana, and Ohio and found that people enrolled in them have less financial protection if they need treatment for COVID-19 than people enrolled in ACA plans.         (Source: The Commonwealth Fund: Blog)

The dimension of time
It is very puzzling how many reporters, commentators and politicians don ' t seem to get the basic idea that an epidemic has a temporal dimension. They will write something to the effect that a policy failure has resulted in the death of 60,000 Americans, and by the time the piece is published the number is 66,000. The front page of the New York Times today says that nearly 80,000 Americans have died, but as I write this at 8:40 AM the officially reported number is 80,678 and by the time you read this it will be more. The most bizarre use of this elimination of the dimension of time was back when people were saying things l...

Doing it right . ..
or at least making a responsible effort. Several Republican governors are easing restrictions even though the rate of new cases, hospitalizations, and deaths is still increasing in their states. And they ' re doing it with what seems not just a lack of judicious thought, but outright perversity, as in Georgia where the first businesses allowed to open included massage and tattoo parlors, followed in a few days by bars and restaurants. We ' ll see where that gets them in three or four weeks.Meanwhile, Connecticut was one of the hardest hit states, because of its proximity to the initial severe outbreak in the eastern New Yo...

Aquadex Ultrafiltration for Critical COVID Patients: Interview with John Erb, CEO at CHF Solutions
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, many healthcare facilities around the world are inundated with critically ill patients, and resources such as equipment and staff are stretched thin. Shortages of critical equipment, such as ventilators, can mean the difference between life and death for patients, and the need to keep critically ill patients comfortable and alive has spurred healthcare staff and medtech companies to innovate and look for alternatives. One example of this involves finding alternatives to dialysis machines. Certain critically ill COVID-19 patients are at risk of acute kidney injury, and dialysis is need...

The price of life
In public health, we understand that commonplace assertions to the effect that human life is infinitely precious, or you can ' t put a price on human life, just don ' t work. Nobody treats human life as priceless, especially people who are inclined to say that sort of thing. Each of us personally takes risks such as riding in a car or climbing a ladder every day. Some people smoke tobacco, some people don ' t wash their hands after they handle raw meat. Some people work in dangerous occupations. And obviously we don ' t structure public policy around the proposition that human life is priceless. We don ' t provide affordabl...

The Death Cult
So Georgia Governor (by electoral fraud) Brian Kemp was listening to the deranged ravings of his Dear Leader on the Teevee and picked up that it was time to liberate Georgia. He had a phone conversation with Dear Leader and got the go ahead. So he announced that he was going to open up the state in the most responsible way, by first allowing barber shops, hair salons, bowling alleys and massage parlors to open on Friday -- I mean, what could be more conducive to social distancing than a massage, amirite? Then restaurants and bars on Monday. Whereupon Dear Leader announced that he didn ' t think that was such a great idea, ...

Reopening Georgia is a gamble. Here ’s why.
When I first heard that my state is planning to reopen soon, I was shocked. I was busily seeing patients that day when I received an alert on my phone. Perplexed and stunned, I couldn ’t help but to stop what I was doing, reached for some hand sanitizer, so that I could actually pick up […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more.
