Ultrasound Catheter to Treat Hypertension
Researchers at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and the Université de Paris, France, have tested an ultrasound denervation catheter in its potential to treat hypertension. The technology is called the Paradise ultrasound denervation device and it has been developed by ReCor Medical, a medtech company with offices in California and the UK. The concept is based on the phenomenon whereby overactive neural activity in the kidney can lead to increases in sodium and water retention, underlying hypertension. The device is a catheter that can be advanced through the vasculature until it reaches the kidneys and then activ...

Quotations Missing from Bartlett ’s
David BoazOverat The Dispatch (ungatedhere) I have a critique of the latest edition ofBartlett ' s Familiar Quotations. As I say,Bartlett ' sis " the gold standard of quotations, the place anyone can go to confirm a quote and see the source. " But its editors " seem far more familiar with the words of liberal, leftist, and socialist sources than those of conservatives and libertarians. "Over the past 40 years, since the rise of Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, John Paul II, and even Deng Xiaoping, the world has seen a turn toward markets and economic freedom (albeit with a fall in 2020 during the pandemic lockdowns). But...

Our OMI Toolbox Application is out now !
We are happy to announce that our " OMI Toolbox " application has just released and ready for your use. As myocardial infarction (MI) and many other diagnoses (for example left ventricular hypertrophy, prior MI etc.) can cause ST-segment elevation (STE) on electrocardiogram (ECG), the distinction between them may be hard and complicated. Furthermore, some ECGs may not meet the STEMI criteria but may still be diagnostic for acute coronary occlusion (ACO). For this purpose, only one set of diagnostic or differentiating criteria (STEMI criteria) is not enough, therefore a bunch of different tools are needed to make a&nbs...

Last in Line: Hospitals Brace for a Chilly 2023
BY JEFF GOLDSMITH As they emerge from the COVID pandemic, US hospitals have a terrible case of Long COVID.  They experienced the worst financial performance in 2022 in this analyst’s 47 year memory.  As the nation recovers from the worst inflation in forty years, hospitals will find themselves locked in conflict with health insurers over contract renewals that would reset their rates to the actual delivered cost of care.  “Last in line” in the US battle with inflation, hospitals will be exposed to public criticism when they attempt to recover from pandemic-induced financial losses.  Hospital payment rates f...

The New Deal and Recovery, Part 23: The Great Rapprochement
George SelginWhat finally brought the Great Depression to an end? We ' ve seen that, whatever it was, it took place not during the 30s but sometime between then and the end of World War II, when a remarkable postwar revival occurred instead of the renewed depression many feared. We ' ve also seen that, while postwar fiscal and monetary policies weren ' t austere to the point of preventing that revival, they alone can ' t explain it, because they can ' t explain the reawakening of private business investment from its decade-and-a-half-long slumber.Animal SpiritsTo get to the bottom of that reawakening, we must first recall ...

Muslim Anger at Sweden over Qur ’an Burning Is Misplaced
Mustafa Akyol andJohan NorbergThese days, there isanger across the Muslim world against Sweden. Large protests against the small Scandinavian nation have taken place in Turkey, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran, Indonesia, Afghanistan, and Lebanon. In some places Swedish flags were burnt, and some even chanted, “Death to the Swedish government.”All this is a reaction against an act of one man: far ‐right Danish politician Rasmus Paludan, who also happens to be a Swedish citizen. On Jan 21,he publicly burnt a copy of the Qur ’an in front of the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm. Turkish authorities responded with st...

Roast Cauliflower with Vadouvan Butter
In the “How did I not know about this before?” category, allow me to introduce you to vadouvan, a delicious Indo-French curry spice mix that will blow your taste buds and your mind. Thanks to bro Joe for turning me on to vadouvan, though the real credit goes to the French colonists in seventeenth century Pundicherry, India who created the spice mix as they blended French and Indian cuisines. Vadouvan is complex and piquant but milder than traditional curry, and a truly exotic treat for your taste buds. Joe learned about Vadouvan from his buddy Mourad, the modern Moroccan chef whose book Mourad-New Moroccan ...

Reducing Viral Spread in Schools: France Makes Proactive Move to Measure and Reduce CO2 Levels in School and Daycare
One of my favorite gadgets from the pandemic is the AraNet 4 CO2 monitor. I carry it with me whenever I am curious about an indoor space. This easy-to-use monitor gives a simple red-yellow-green reading of the CO2 level. At a green level (<1000 ppm) it is harder to transmit an airborne viral infection. At a red level (>1400 ppm) it is much easier to catch a virus if someone else in the room is sick. I use this in restaurants and on airplanes, for instance, to help guide my actions. As a bonus, CO2 levels also correlate with alertness and productivity. When CO2 levels drift into the yellow range (>1000 ppm), cognit...

Goug ères
Gougères. The perfect appetizer for the holidays. So impressive, so fancy, so French. And yet, they are so easy to make. Even better, they can be made ahead and frozen, then simply reheated in the oven when your guests arrive, as they are best served warm. Gougere are simply a savory cream puff. I first learned to make cream puffs in college, when I spent my summers in the dessert kitchen of a sleep away camp in New Hampshire. My boss, whose late husband had been a French-trained chef, brought his recipes into the camp kitchen and ran the place like it was the French Laundry. She taught me how NOT to put the knives...

Nam
I ' m reading Vietnam: An epic tragedy, 1945-1975, by Max Hastings. In many ways it ' s more instructive than other histories I have read of the Vietnam war. It begins with the Vietminh rebellion against French rule, and the gradual takeover of the war by the U.S., which is helpful context. Hastings ranges over all of the parties: the North Vietnamese government, society and army; the South Vietnamese puppet government, its army and society; U.S political leaders, military leaders, and the military in Vietnam; civilian profiteers; China and the Soviet Union; and the U.S. public, both pro and anti-war.The partition of Vietn...
