Analysis of Human Mortality Data at Extreme Old Age from the International Database on Longevity
Very old flies cease to age, at least under the definition of aging as the rise of mortality rate with age. Very old flies have a high mortality rate, but that rate plateaus. There has been some back and forth over the years as to whether such a late life plateau in mortality rates can be observed in humans. Presently the consensus is that it is not apparent. It is, however, challenging to draw any robust conclusions on human mortality past the age of 110, as there are so very few survivors to that late stage of life. All of this is fascinating from a scientific point of view, but something of a sideshow when it comes to t...

Cattle Egret, Bubulcus ibis
A Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) flew into Berry Fen when we visited a couple of days ago to settle among the eight Little Egrets feeding there. In so doing it spooked two of the six Glossy Ibis that were feeding on the edge of a flooded area and they flew off to join four others of that species. There are cattle on the fen, but the egret didn’t come in close. Cattle Egret over Berry Fen near Earith, Cambridgeshire, October 2021. Sixteen of this species seen there, the following day (county record) Apparently, there were fifteen additional Cattle Egret in a flock on the same patch the day after we visited, which is the...

The people we can be
A lot of the lyrics to my songs come out ad lib when I have a go at recording a first-pass demo of a new tune. I usually then edit them into shape as the song evolves. But, sometimes they have a bit more of a story, and although the basics just emerge as I’m putting it together, they do get more craft occasionally. My latest conflates a couple of encounters Mrs Sciencebase and I have had with Paris over the years. The most recent encounter was from a high altitude, a few years ago we were flying back at night from a trip to Croatia and could see Paris from the airliner. The Eiffel Tower was illuminated and looked lik...

An enigma
We ' ve lately been confronting the reality of sexual abuse of young people, that can happen whenever adults are in a position of power. We ' ve read horrific stories about physicians, coaches, scout leaders, teachers and clergy. A disturbing common thread is what seems a nearly universal institutional response of denial and cover up. This was the basic story of the Boston Globe expose of the Catholic church 20 years ago. It was the essence of the Jerry Sandusky story, that destroyed the reputation of Joe Paterno not to mention the president of Penn State. And it is the core of the Larry Nassar story -- not only USA gymnas...

Haitians Assimilate Well in the United States
David J. BierHaitian immigrants have received more attention in recent weeks after the U.S. governmenttrapped them in terrible conditions at a  camp along the U.S.-Mexico border and is now using extraordinary legal methods toexpel more than 500 per day. But there is no reason to oppose Haitian immigration. Despite extreme challenges, Haitians integrate well into the U.S. economy and society. Across numerous economic and social measures, Haitians and their U.S. descendants contribute to and prosper in their new country.First Generation Haitian Immigrants AssimilateHaitians mostly speak Haitian creole —a mix of French an...

Left-Wing Authoritarianism Is Real And Needs To Be Taken Seriously In Political Psychology, Study Argues
By Emma Young Authoritarianism has been well-studied by psychologists. Well, right-wing authoritarianism has. In fact, as that’s typically the only type that’s studied, you might be forgiven for thinking that’s what authoritarianism is. The very idea of left-wing authoritarianism (LWA) has received not only little academic attention, but a lot of scepticism from psychologists. “I think I have not found any authoritarians on the left because if there ever were any, most of them have dried up and blown away….” wrote Bob Altemeyer, pioneer of work on right-wing authoritarianism, in 1996. But as Thomas Coste...

Some Key EASD News for T1D
This week, the European rival to the ADA Scientific Sessions known as EASD (which stands for the European Association for the Study of Diabetes) held its annual meeting, which was the organization ' s 57th Annual Meeting and it took place virtually (much like the ADA Scientific Sessions did this year) due to COVID-19. EASD was held from September 27, 2021 to October 1, 2021. In recent years, neither the ADA Scientific Sessions not the EASD Meetings have yielded many surprise findings or previously unknown product launches. My short summary is that Novo Nordisk is finally getting on the " smart pen " cap bandwagon, while riv...

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
September 30, 2021 Edition ----- Globally the pressure to do more on addressing Climate Change is building led by the US and catching Australia in the need to do more – which seems even to be agreed by the Coalition Govt. It has been a international news focussed week with our PM all over the global stage with The Quad and AUKUS while we still have a very grumpy France to deal with, to say nothing of actually getting some submarines from someone in the next 20 years. Otherwise we have seen all sorts of pestilence from Earthquakes in Victoria to erupting volcanoes in Spain! I suspect the Gods are a bit annoyed right now. ...

Eyevensys Electrotransfection System for Ocular Disease: Interview with Patricia Zilliox, CEO
Eyevensys, a medtech company based in France, has developed the Eyevensys Electrotransfection System, a non-viral transfection system for the treatment of ocular diseases. So far, the firm has demonstrated the safety of the technique in treating noninfectious uveitis and is developing treatments for geographic atrophy, retinitis pigmentosa, and wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The technology delivers DNA plasmids to the ciliary muscle in the eye, leading to long-term production of proteins in the back of the eye for therapeutic benefit. The electricity is delivered in short pulses and helps to drive the genet...
