High School Student Who Punched His Principal in the Face Won ’t Go to Jail
(NEW YORK) — A New York City high schooler who punched his principal, leaving the administrator with two black eyes, will avoid jail time as long as he stays out of trouble for three years. The New York Post reports Saturday that 19-year-old Luis Penzo completed a family therapy program as part of his conditional discharge. Prosecutors say the confrontation occurred when a principal asked Penzo to turn down music blaring from his headphones last October. They say Penzo refused, then slugged his principal twice, leaving him with a cut that required seven stiches to close. Penzo was arrested and charged with assault. H...

Guidelines for Helping Your Loved One with Schizophrenia
In my practice I have seen several clients with schizophrenia. In that time I have noticed that a good majority of the therapy and psychoeducation is also needed for the family and loved ones of the person with schizophrenia. I cannot tell you how many times I hear pleas from family members that they just want to know how to help, communicate, understand and engage with their loved one but cannot find enough resources or help. The purpose of this article is to offer some understanding of the cycle of schizophrenia as well as “do’s” and “don’ts” of how to help your loved one. Responding to Beliefs or Hallucinati...

Simpler therapy may successfully treat adolescents with anorexia nervosa
Family-based treatment (FBT) is an effective evidence-based therapy for adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN) and is the recommended approach to treatment at the present time. The effectiveness of other treatments such as individual psychotherapy (ego-oriented therapy) and generic family therapy (systemic family therapy) is based on less evidence and such treatments are not as effective as FBT.1 Whether treatment involving the whole family, or a simpler treatment involving parents only, differ in effectiveness is not known. This was a single-site study conducted at the Royal Children ' s Hospital, Melbourne, Australia. Family therapy for autism spectrum disorders
Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are characterised by impairments in communication and reciprocal social interaction. These impairments can impact on relationships with family members, augment stress and frustration, and contribute to behaviours that can be described as challenging. Family members of individuals with ASD can experience high rates of carer stress and burden, and poor parental efficacy. While there is evidence to suggest that individuals with ASD and family members derive benefit from psychological interventions designed to reduce stress and mental health morbidity, and enhance coping, most studies to date h...

When Advice Crosses the Line
During the process of my son’s recovery from his eating disorder I have received advice from many places. More often than not this advice was helpful and appreciated. Many people have shared with me their tips and creative strategies for managing eating disorders in their homes and many of them I utilized in our own home. That was usually a very ill-informed statement or comment that would sometimes make me wonder whether it was intended to be helpful at all or who it was ...
