Peril in the Air: Pollution Activism on Film
Moving images prove a powerful medium for conveying the impact of polluted air on humans and other living things. This often-invisible menace can have catastrophic effects. In 1948, the Donora Smog in Pennsylvania killed 20 and sickened half of the town ’ s population, while in the UK the Great Smog of 1952 led to 12,000 deaths — and a Clean Air Act just four years later. Add to these events Rachel Carson ’ s 1962 book Silent Spring, and the modern environmental movement took root. Legislative and societal changes followed on both sides of the Atlantic. In this presentation of select US and British films on air pollu...

Innate Immunity for Bacteria Against Phage
My lab has a long-standing interest in the signaling pathways and regulatory networks that enable bacteria to sense and respond to their environments. Most recently, we have focused on toxin-antitoxin systems, which are abundant, but still poorly understood genetic modules found throughout the bacterial kingdom. We study the mechanisms of action of the toxins, the coevolution of toxins and antitoxins, and the role of toxin-antitoxin systems in providing bacteria immunity to some classes of bacteriophage, which will be the topic of my seminar. For more information go tohttps://oir.nih.gov/walsAir date: 3/17/2021 3:00:00 PM (...

Breastmilk Ecology: Genesis of Infant Nutrition (BEGIN) Meeting Series: Working Group 5: Translation and Integration
A deeper understanding of the biology of human milk is essential to address ongoing and emerging questions about infant feeding practices. Human milk is a complex biological system, a matrix of many interacting parts, that is more than the sum of those parts. Its production needs to be studied as an ecology that consists of inputs from the mother, her breastfeeding baby, and their respective environments. The Breastmilk Ecology: Genesis of Infant Nutrition (BEGIN) meeting series is designed to examine this ecology, its functional implications for both mother and infant. The goal is to support the research community ’ s e...
