Three Big Changes
Prognosticators offer narratives of what the post-pandemic world will look like, and we see leaders invoke Rahm Emanuel (or was it Winston Churchill?) in their expressions of how they will “Gretzky” this. Here’s my take.  None of this is particularly prescient, but I’ve been asked a few times what I think comes next.  My real answer?  I don’t know.  Some guesses below – all brought to you by the letter p. Place – where things will happen will never be the same.  The assumptions we have made about where things need to happen will evaporate, as many of them already have.  Whe...

The Fantastic Autoimmune Beasts and Where to Find Them
Hairy, scary, funny looking or pretty cool. The beasts in the Harry Potter universe are quite the diverse bunch with unique abilities and qualities. Just like new digital health tech targeted to fight autoimmune diseases or for the main part: their symptoms. Source: Warner Bros. Framestore The common ground for completely different illnesses like type 1 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis is an immune system disfunction. Immune cells and mechanisms target the body’s own cells and structures, deconstructing it bit by bit and inducing inflammation. An estimated...

How the science of learning salvaged my college career
As an aspiring physician on the pre-med track (a microbiology and immunology major), I believe that creating a strong academic foundation, especially in math and science, is essential for future career and academic success. Growing up in Miami’s more improvised area, Liberty City, quality learning materials were scarce. Even when there were resources for active learning, most students were completely unaware of their existence or lacked the training to make effective use of the learning materials. The end result would usually be that students lacked the essential study skills they need to make use of all the educational ...

Burnout doesn ’t start in medical school
Burnout affects as many as 50 percent of physicians. Interventions have been proposed at virtually every stage of a physician’s life, from medical school to residency training to professional practice. While the rigors of medical training certainly contribute to the high levels of burnout in the profession, there are indications that the trouble begins at the undergraduate level. I recently graduated from an undergraduate program geared toward students interested in medicine. Through an anonymous forum on our e-learning platform, numerous students have confessed to feeling a profound sense of inadequacy regarding their a...

Safe Water Program Improvement e-Learning Series (SWPI)
Take CDC’s Safe Water Program Improvement e-Learning Series (SWPI) for safer well water through stronger public health programs. SWPI helps health department programs strengthen services to people that use wells, cisterns, springs, and other private drinking water systems not covered by the Safe Drinking Water Act. Oversight for these systems vary, but core elements of successful, sustainable programs are similar. SWPI walks through the 10 Essential Environmental Public Health Services and the Environmental Public Health Performance Standards, and provides examples of using them to identify and fill program gaps in these...
