Smacc foam q/a
One of the more experimental sessions at SMACC earlier this year was a free-form two hour session on FOAM that consisted of an ad hoc discussion involving some prominent creators of FOAM with the opportunity for audience interaction and questioning. Sometimes teetering on the verge of an AA-style meeting for FOAMaholics, the discussion will be of interest to anyone interested in online learning, especially that which is free and open access to everyone. Educational, entertaining and controversial — what more could you want? The people on the sofas up on the SMACC stage were: Scott Weingart of EMCrit Joe Lex of Free Eme...

SMACC FOAM in Review
Well what an honour it was to be part of SMACC2013. I had the huge task — and huge privilege — to review the best of Free Open Access Meducation of 2012. What a cracker of a year it was for the #FOAMed world. When I set out to write this talk I new I was in for a big job, due to the shear amount of quality content I would need to cover and review! The other daunting prospect was that many of the authors of the content I would be talking about would be sitting in te audience! I hope I managed to give all their hard work the credit it deserved. Check out the slides below and have a listen to the talk — to find out for...

The International OCD Foundation: Hoarding Center
Have you seen the television show The Hoarders?  Many people who watch this show may feel that this is just a very few people who experience such things, and those people on that show are not exactly “normal.”  Well, unfortunately, this is more normal than most people think.  Hoarding is very closely related to obsessive compulsive disorder, and there are people who have rooms and buildings and storage sheds that are full of items of things that they may never see again (or know they even have to begin with). Thankfully, there are places that know about this kind of situation and are willing to help.  The I...

Doctors are bottlenecks
Doctors think of themselves as being indispensable . Most have pretty high self-esteem – after all, in order to successfully get through medical college , you need a lot of physical stamina and mental energy. You need to perform well academically , in order to graduate , and if you are used to being in the top 10 % of our class, you start thinking of yourself as being special ! The fact that their patients are so dependent on them – and that they are willing to wait patiently for hours for their advice , it’s easy to understand why doctors get used to being put on pedestal. It's hard to think of yourself as being ...

TechTool review of PalmEM by PalmER Worldwide LLC on iOS  and Android    Website: – iTunes - Android - Website Last year I reviewed PalmEM’s younger sibling PalmPedi and I really liked it.  PalmEM includes the PalmPedi content, and aims to cover everything you might need to know about Emergency Medicine).  Is that really possible?  It just might be. Design and User Interface Simple, clean and lovely.  As with any text-based app, it is difficult to make it interesting for the user.  But this app does it as best as any I’ve seen.  The text is clearly readable with no distractions, but there are a few ...

Recent Survey Shows the Need for Education on the Differences Between BioSimilars
The North American for Continuing Medical Education, LLC (NACCME) recently announced the results of a survey of oncologists, rheumatologists, managed care professionals, pharmacists, and primary care learners. The study, conducted in April 2013, focused on awareness of and need for information on biosimilar agents, with results strongly supporting the need for comprehensive education on this topic. Over 400 health professionals participated in the survey, revealing: More than half of respondents said their understanding of the differences between biosimilars versus generics was only fair to poor Over 67% of surv...

TechTool review of ICU Trial by ClinCalc at  and Journal Club App by Peripheral Brain LLC on iPhone, iPad and Android     ICU Trial – iTunes - Android – Website versus Journal Club - iTunes - Android - Website This week I’m going to try something a little different.  It’s been suggested to me (by @srrezaie) that two apps – ICU Trials and Journal Club – are both aiming for a similar goal. They both summarise trials/research for us to keep up-to-date with current best practice. So, are they both worth investing in, or is there one clear winner? Overcoming Pharma’s Social Media Challenges: My Roche Digital Academy Presentation
I spent the last two weeks or so touring Germany and Italy -- specifically Berlin, Munich, and Milan -- stopping along the way to give presentations at Bayer Health in Berlin (see here) and at the Roche Digital Academy in Milan (see here). I met many digital pharma people working inside and outside these companies who are very passionate about what they are doing. I hope to highlight some of them in future posts and interviews. Right now, however, I will document my Roche Digital Academy visit with photos and the presentation itself. The Roche Digital Academy is a project that has enrolled over 80 Roche employees who are pa...

Imagining the future
The ACEM conference in Hobart 2012 was an excellent event which juxtaposed art and science with inspiration and education in the setting of stimulation and entertainment. Thankfully many of the talks and presentations are now being released for general consumption, and we will highlight some of the key speakers and talks on LITFL. One session I was fortunate to be involved with was on ‘Imagining the future of e-learning and education’ with Prof Kendall Ho and Mr Stephen Atherton. Although this is a long 90 minute session and the slides appear intermittently – there are some great thoughts and learning p...
