Children with developmental coordination disorder are less able to fine-tune muscle activity in anticipation of postural perturbations than typically developing counterparts
The majority of children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) struggle with static and dynamic balance, yet there is limited understanding of the underlying neuromechanical mechanisms that underpin poor balance control in these children. Eighteen children with DCD and seven typically developing (TD) children aged 7–10 years stood with eyes open on a moveable platform progressively translated antero-posteriorly through three frequencies (0.1, 0.25 and 0.5 Hz). Myoelectric activity of eight leg muscles, whole-body 3D kinematics and centre of pressure were recorded. At each frequency, postural data were divide...

Motor-cognitive coupling is impaired in children with mild or severe forms of developmental coordination disorder
Children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) show deficits in motor-cognitive coupling. However, it remains unclear whether such deficits depend on the severity of DCD. The aim of this study was to examine cognitive-motor coupling under different levels of inhibitory control in children with severe (s-DCD) or moderate DCD (m-DCD), compared with typically-developing children (TDC). The performance of 29 primary-school children aged 6–12 years with s-DCD (Mage = 9.12 ± 1.56 years), 53 m-DCD (Mage = 8.78 ± 1.67 years), and 201 TDC (Mage = 9.20 ± 1.50 years) was compared on a dou...

Sensors, Vol. 23, Pages 8410: Instrumented Gait Classification Using Meaningful Features in Patients with Impaired Coordination
. Maurits Early onset ataxia (EOA) and developmental coordination disorder (DCD) both affect cerebellar functioning in children, making the clinical distinction challenging. We here aim to derive meaningful features from quantitative SARA-gait data (i.e., the gait test of the scale for the assessment and rating of ataxia (SARA)) to classify EOA and DCD patients and typically developing (CTRL) children with better explainability than previous classification approaches. We collected data from 18 EOA, 14 DCD and 29 CTRL children, while executing both SARA gait tests. Inertial measurement units were used to acquire movemen...

Action-outcome Regularity Perceptual Sensitivity in Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder
CONCLUSION: The current results suggest that children with DCD have significantly reduced perceptual sensitivity to action-outcome regularity at younger ages, which may alter SoA and inhibit internal model development, thereby reducing motor skill coordination.PMID:37812371 | DOI:10.1007/s10803-023-06144-x (Source: Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders)

CONCLUSION: His unremarkable neurocognitive profile suggested compensatory strategies may have masked symptoms. This case highlights need for bicultural/bilingual neuropsychologists with experience providing comprehensive ASD evaluations to practice from equitable framework, using the SRN model to enhance early detection, treatment recommendations, and advocacy for access to culturally/linguistically appropriate resources.PMID:37807575 | DOI:10.1093/arclin/acad067.373 (Source: Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology)

Preterm Birth and Developmental Coordination Disorder: What Do We Know and Not Know?
AbstractPurpose of ReviewDespite increasing research on the association between preterm birth and DCD, some critical questions remain unanswered. This review therefore aims to examine the current state of knowledge and identify areas that require further research.Recent FindingsRecent findings indicate that preterm birth is associated with a greater risk of DCD, with increasing severity of impairment observed with decreasing gestational age before 40 weeks. Numerous studies have examined risk factors for preterm DCD, but few have investigated the mechanisms separately for preterm and term-born DCD, which makes it challengi...

Impact of developmental coordination disorder in childhood on educational outcomes in adulthood among neonatal intensive care recipients: a register-based longitudinal cohort study
Conclusions pDCD during childhood may have a lasting impact on educational outcomes, particularly among women. Raising awareness of DCD among parents, health and educational professionals is vital for early identification and the provision of appropriate support and interventions in schools, mitigating the potential negative consequences associated with DCD and promoting positive educational outcomes.
