Turning weeds into feed: Ensiling Calotropis gigantea (Giant milkweed) reduces its toxicity and enhances its palatability for dairy cows
This study aimed to valorize GM as a potential new feed resource through the chemical and microbial biotransformation of toxic compounds that will henceforth, make the plant palatable for cows. After GM's ensiling using fermentative bacteria, the plant was sampled for UHPLC-MS/MS to analyse the metabolomic changes. Illumina Miseq of the 16 S rRNA fragment genes and ITS1 were used to describe the microbial composition and structure colonizing GM silage and contributing to the biodegradation of toxic compounds. Microbial functions were predicted from metataxonomic data and KEGG pathways analysis. Eight Holstein dairy cows as...

Pregnancy losses in Bos indicus-influenced beef and dairy recipients assigned to a fixed-time embryo transfer protocol
Anim Reprod Sci. 2024 Apr 3;264:107471. doi: 10.1016/j.anireprosci.2024.107471. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPregnancy losses from fixed-time embryo transfer (FTET) to calving were evaluated in Bos indicus-influenced beef and dairy recipients. Data from 4366 FTET events were collected from Nelore × Angus recipient heifers, and from 38538 FTET events in Gir × Holstein recipient heifers and cows. In beef recipients, pregnancy losses were greater (P < 0.01) from FTET (day 7 of the experiment) to day 32 compared with day 32-100 and with day 100 to calving (58.7, 39.5, and 36.7%, respectively), and did not differ (P = 0.5...

Older Adults' Perceptions of the 2019 Canada's Food Guide: A Qualitative Study
Conclusion: Older adults in the Province of Quebec view most of the 2019 CFG recommendations positively. Our observations may be useful to dietitians and public health practitioners when developing strategies to improve adherence.PMID:38578688 | DOI:10.3148/cjdpr-2023-029 (Source: Canadian Journal of Dietetic Practice and Research)

Bird flu may be spreading in cows via milking and herd transport
The bird flu virus spreading through dairy cattle in the United States may be expanding its reach via milking equipment, the people doing the milking, or both U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) representatives reported today at an international, virtual meeting held to update the situation. The avian virus may not be spreading directly from cows breathing on cows, as some researchers have speculated, according to USDA scientists who took part in the meeting organized jointly by the World Organisation for Animal Health and the U.N.’s Food and Agricultural Organization. “We haven't seen any true indication that ...
