Oxidative Stress in Roots: Detection of Lipid Peroxidation and Total Antioxidative Capacity
Methods Mol Biol. 2022;2447:221-231. doi: 10.1007/978-1-0716-2079-3_18.ABSTRACTVarious abiotic and biotic agents disturb the fine balance between cellular oxidants and antioxidants. The resulting oxidative stress occurs either due to the increasing levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or weak antioxidative system that cannot scavenge ROS burst. In addition to their harmful role, ROS can also act as signaling molecules, and oxidative stress is often the initial step in the programmed cell death. Here we describe two parameters of oxidative stress that can be measured spectrophotometrically: lipid peroxidation via the con...

Eco-friendly whey/polysaccharide-based hydrogel with poly(lactic acid) for improvement of agricultural soil quality and plant growth
Int J Biol Macromol. 2022 May 10:S0141-8130(22)01014-5. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2022.05.053. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA set of renewable and biodegradable hydrogels based on acid whey and cellulose derivatives blended with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) were designed as eco-friendly biopolymeric material for sustainable agricultural applications. The physico-chemical properties of the hydrogel were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and rheological measurements. The effect of the whey/polysaccharide/PLA hydrogel on soil quality improvement (water retention stud...

Ecotoxicity of polyelectrolyte formulations in water and soil matrices
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2022 Apr 29. doi: 10.1007/s11356-022-20449-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInterpolyelectrolyte complexes (IPECs) formed by the interaction of two oppositely charged polyelectrolytes have been proposed as soil structure stabilizers. However, little is known about the environmental safety of IPECs. The goal of this study was to investigate the toxicity of a positively charged IPEC formed by two commercial polymers, namely the cationic biopolymer poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and the anionic biopolymer lignohumate (LH), a humic-based plant growth promoter. Toxicity was assessed us...

Thermal paper as a potential source of bisphenol A for humans and the environment: migration and ecotoxicological impact
The objective of this work was to evaluate thermal paper (TP) tickets used in Argentina as a potential source of bisphenol A (BPA) that could impact humans and the environment. BPA in TP was measured by HPLC ranging from 11.1 to 30.5 mg BPAg-1. In order to estimate the impact on humans, dermal BPA estimated daily intake was calculated as being 79.3 ± 19.5 μgd-1 for workers and 1.6 ± 0.4 μgd-1 for the general population. To evaluate TP's impact on the environment, BPA migration from TP to water and soil was studied. In the case of water, 99.6% of the BPA tickets content migrated in 30 h, while 78.0% moved into the soil ...
