Outcomes and resource utilization in calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty: a cross-sectional analysis
AbstractThis cross-sectional study aims to evaluate the predictors, outcomes, and resource utilization of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease (CPPD) patients. We used the US National Inpatient Sample database to identify CPPD and non-CPPD who underwent TKA from 2006 to 2014. Data collection included patient demographics and comorbidities. Outcomes following TKA included in-hospital mortality, complications, length of hospitalization, hospital charges, and disposition. Among the 5,564,005 patients who have undergone TKA, 11,529 (0.20%) had CPPD, with a median age of 72  years, and 53.7...

Identification of Common Pathogenic Pathways Involved in Hemochromatosis Arthritis and Calcium Pyrophosphate Deposition Disease: a Review
ConclusionsPossible shared pathogenic pathways relate more to bone and abnormal damage/repair mechanisms than direct damage to articular cartilage. While additional work is necessary to fully understand the pathogenesis of arthritis in HH and to firmly establish causal links with CPPD, this review provides some plausible hypotheses explaining the overlap of these two forms of arthritis. Review: Outcome measures in calcium pyrophosphate deposition
Best Pract Res Clin Rheumatol. 2021 Nov 16:101724. doi: 10.1016/j.berh.2021.101724. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis review highlights outcomes for patients with calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD) reported in prior studies and underscores challenges to assessing outcomes of this condition. Prior clinical studies of interventions for CPPD focused on joint damage and calcification on imaging tests, joint pain, swelling, and inflammatory biomarkers. Qualitative interviews with patients with CPPD and healthcare providers additionally identified flares, overall function, and use of analgesic medications as important outc...

Multilevel calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition in cervical ligamentum flavum: clinical characteristics and imaging features
Involvement in cervical ligamentum flavum is a rare manifestation of the calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition disease. Only few cases of this condition have been reported. We revealed eighteen cases of C... (Source: BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders)

Chondrocalcinosis: Advances in Diagnostic Imaging
AbstractPurpose of ReviewCalcium pyrophosphate deposition disease (CPPD) arises from calcium pyrophosphate deposition throughout the body, leading to different clinical syndromes that may be diagnosed using various imaging modalities. The purpose of this review is to highlight recent updates in the imaging of CPPD.Recent FindingsConventional radiography remains the initial test when imaging CPPD; but musculoskeletal ultrasound and conventional computed tomography (CT) may also assist in diagnosing and characterizing CPP deposits, with increased sensitivity. Dual-energy CT is also being used to differentiate CPP crystals fr...

Rare presentation of intradural calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition
We present a rare, intradural manifestation of CPPD requiring surgical intervention, with a review of pertinent differential diagnoses on imaging. A 48-year-old male presented with urinary retention, and was found to have an intradural lesion with peripheral enhancement on gadolinium T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. Due to the patient ’s progressive neurological deterioration, he was taken for a minimally invasive approach for resection of the lesion. Histopathological analysis revealed crystal deposits with rhomboidal birefringence consistent with CPPD. The imaging features of this lesion were atypical for any of...

Impact of ultrasonography detected quadriceps calcific tendinopathy on pain and function in patients with primary knee osteoarthritis
This study compares pain, function, clinical examination results, and ultrasonographic findings among primary knee osteoarthritis (KOA) patients with or without ultrasonography-detected QCT. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 214 patients with knee OA. Ultrasonography (US) of knee joints was performed according to the EULAR guidelines. Kellgren-Lawrence radiographic grading was used to score OA. Pain and functional status were assessed using the visual analog scale (VAS), the Health Assessment Questionnaire-II (HAQ-II), and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). QCT was detected i...
