In case you get thin
When I saw a recipe for Creme Egg Chocolate Brownies doing the rounds, I couldn’t resist. But when I read the recipe, it struck me as being unduly faffy. So I offer you my own version. Enjoy. Here’s what you need: a 20×20cm-ish square cake pan (as you can see, I’ve got a fancy-pants one, but it’s really not necessary) 6 Creme Eggs 185g butter 200g 85% dark chocolate 3 eggs 265g caster sugar (golden if you have it, but if not the ordinary sort will do just fine) 85g flour 40g cocoa Here’s what you do: Set the oven to 160 degrees C and put the butter and chocolate in a pan over a very lo...

The Mifl Report – February
* MIFL = Month In Focused Living Back in January I chose “focus” as my Word of The Year, a way to set a theme and intention. I’m doing regular MIFL Reports to keep me on the straight and narrow. Ol’ Carnegie catching the last rays, during Up & Running 5K Workout 1.2 today. . . . 1. Bandwagon Muesli A friend of mine in Canberra declared it “porridge weather” the other day so geographically that must mean it’s time for me to commence yogurt season. It’s 4′C/39′F so not exactly toasty but, feck it, I’m sick of porridge. I ransacked the pantry for scraps of...

The Rallying Cry!
My great-aunt made a miraculous recovery and turn for the better yesterday.  We have all convinced her to move to our town away from God’s country and to live in the assisted living home here. She has reluctantly agreed to move. That was a major hurdle to overcome as she can be so headstrong, cantankerous, and stubborn. “Now, you’ve got to go see her once a week,” my father told me. “We’ve all got to accommodate her to make this work.” I agreed I would.  I am the only great nephew left in town able to do so. My father’s side of the family wasn’t exactly prolific when it came to having childre...

When it Rains it Pours…
My great aunt is 95 years old.  We’ve been lucky that she was still able to live in her home in these later senior years.  My father hired Juanita, Helen’s sister, to come everyday to cook and clean.  Well, she is not doing well.  She took a turn for the worse last night and my father drove over to God’s country well after midnight to see about her. We are kind of on a vigil. “I wished she would just go quietly in her sleep and not be in pain,” my father told me earlier. I am feeling very guilty because I seem to have little emotion about it.  My medications can many times blunt my emo...

Good for you chocolate meringue cookies!
After being tortured by Jillian michaels for the last few days and eating dang near close to perfect, I started craving chocolate. Chocolate preferably in the form of cake or cookies. Determined not to give in, I started thinking of an alternative. I thought of meringues, those yummy, crispy airy delicacies. It's just egg whites, right? And a teeny bit of sugar. I figured I could add chocolate and call it a day. I did a quick google search and quickly discovered that there are thousands of recipes out there for meringues! I couldn't believe all of the variations! I just wanted chocolate, so I went with this one and modifie...

The Alzheimer's Diet! Interview & Giveaway & Mini-Review
Good luck clicking.  Image swiped from Amazon 'cause I forgot (!) to ask for one. Alzheimer's is one of those tragic diseases many of us don't like to think about, despite how common it is.  I know very few people whose lives haven't been touched by it in some way. And no lifestyle intervention can guarantee a healthy brain in old age. Let's hope for a cure, pronto. Hurry Up, 'K? Thanks! But in the meantime, there is a lot that clever scientists have discovered about stuff that you can do to make contracting Alzheimer's less likely. Is it worth making a few changes now, perhaps decades ahead of ...

Minutes Till Midnight…
It was exactly just a few moments before midnight when I walked into Wal-Mart last night.  I noticed only one checkout lane was open, but they only had one customer checking out.  I hoped that proved fortuitous for me. Then I realized I could just check out in electronics – the go-to spot for those in the know. I walked straight back to electronics in the rear left corner of the store.  They had The Sims 3 and Skyrim, but not Fallout 3. “You are probably going to have to order Fallout 3 off the internet,” the guy in electronics told me with an air of blasé in his voice.. I refrained from telling h...

Absolutely Enthralled…
I am so absolutely mesmerized by my new Internet connection.  I have tried every speed test I can find on the Internet and the results are amazing and mood elating.  I can’t wait to leave the Literacy Center and play some more when I get home. There’s files to be downloaded folks! And photos to send up yonder to the great internet cloud in the sky. Go to speedtest.knology.net and see what results you get.  I would be interested in what my readership’s speeds are as well. Some of you may be surprised by how fast your connections are. My old speeds were 8 Mbps down and 512 Kbps up. Jack Frost Nipping a...

Ah Friday, the Window to the Weekend…
Charlie has already called me about supper tonight. He was on his way to work in Dadeville.  He also exclamatorily told me his car mileage again.  I think his car is now up to 350,000 miles. “Just get me what Horsefly gets every night,” I told him to make things simple and easy.  “You sure?” Charlie asked. “It is just a three piece chicken fingers meal with double mashed potatoes.” “I would enjoy some chicken fingers,” I replied. “Get me the sweet and sour sauce and I will be happy.” My favorite meal from KFC used to be the tender roast chicken sandwich and a side order of potato we...

Résumé Day…
One of the social worker’s classes here at the Literacy Center this morning mentioned and urged their students to apply for jobs online so I’ve been busier than a cat covering up poop helping everybody – one of the few times I’ve seen the computer lab filled with so many people.  The time is just flying by until I head home.  I want to just crawl in bed for a few hours more.  I forgot to take my nightly dosage of crazy medications and took them this morning in haste which was a bad decision.  They made me extremely drowsy as usual. Helen was back at work this morning my mother excitedly called...

Sunlight Before Signing in Obama's First Term
Jim Harper “Sunlight Before Signing” was President Obama’s 2008 campaign promise to put all bills Congress sent him online for five days before signing them. It was a measurable promise that I’ve monitored here since the beginning of his first term, and I will continue to do so in his second. It was the president’s first broken promise, and in the first year he broke it again with almost every new law, giving just six of the first 124 bills he signed the exposure he promised. With his first term concluded last month, we can now assess how well the president did with Sunlight Before Signing. Complianc...

How Does Colorgirl Outlast Lipcolor work?
Bandana begs to know…I love Covergirl Outlast All Day lip color for the summer–I can boat, pool, eat, and have lovely fresh looking lips! When I put on the lipstick, I can’t help but think of nail polish because you have to let it dry. (It’s safe, right?) How in the heck does it work? AND how does the top coat make it shiny and petroleum jelly remove it? The Beauty Brains response:  Most long lasting lip colors stay in place because the colorants stain the skin. That approach is fine but it means that those products can only offer a limited number of shades because not every lip color acts as a s...

Get Your “Green Smoothie” On – A Delicious Way to Drink Your Veggies
Smoothies can be a smart food choice any time of day. They make a quick and healthy meal when you’re pinched for time. They’re great for exercise recovery because they have carbohydrates and protein. They’re an easy way to get more fruits and vegetables, which are packed with vitamins and minerals to give you energy. My favorite smoothie is “green” – super simple. Just add frozen banana, spinach, and protein powder to a blender. Toss in a little ice and push GO! But your smoothie can be any color of the rainbow. So get creative. Basic Fruit and Veggie Smoothie “Recipe”: This is a basic recipe t...

The Deal with Snowmageddon…
Well, it was a no snow event for us. I looked like the kid to the left. All we got was a lousy brisk and bitterly, biting cold north wind. It was cold enough this morning that my CD player in my car wouldn’t work. No worries. It will work after it sits and basks in the sun for awhile -- just one of those idiosyncrasies when owning a decade old car. I am currently listening to a lot of Sarah McLachlan in the car. Ah, bless her soul.  She sure can sing! Mom’s best friend, Mrs. Sandra, was sick with the flu last night so we didn’t have our usual Mexican Thursday meal.  I won’t lie and say I wasn't very disa...
