If you smoke clove cigarettes you should try clove electronic cigarettes instead
I smoked Djarum clove cigarettes for longer than I can remember.  About 6 months ago I tried clove electronic cigarettes instead.  I can honestly say, at only 6 months later, I feel like a different person.  I exercise regularly, I have a better diet and my breath doesn’t smell like an ashtray! I use the disposable e-cigs instead of the chargeable kind. Here is a video review of clove e-cigs to give you an idea about how similar clove e-cigs are to the real clove cigarettes.     I use Viper clove disposable electronic cigarettes.  All i can say is that they are amazing!  I thi...

Slow-Cooker General Tso’s Chicken
Chinese food has always been one of my favorites! While takeout is easy, it’s not always healthy. Recently, I’ve been on the hunt to create a healthy alternative to a family favorite general tso’s chicken dish. This image was reprinted with permission from http://mealmakeovermoms.com/ and http://healthyaperture.com I wanted to find a way to pack in all of the flavor of this meal, while reducing the excessive amount of fat sodium that oftentimes comes in the fried takeout version. I was also looking for a way to increase the vegetables and make the recipe just as easy as ordering takeout. Slow Cooker Me...

Indonesia to Seek Compensation for Lost Sales Due to U.S. Clove Cigarettes Ban
According to an article in the Jakarta Globe, Indonesia will seek compensation from the United States for sales losses due to its ban on clove cigarettes, which was found to be a discriminatory trade practice without health justification by the World Trade Organization.According to the article: "Indonesia will seek compensation from the United States for pulling its clove cigarettes from shelves despite a World Trade Organization (WTO) ruling that deemed the ban discriminatory. Indonesia’s trade ministry said it had lost between $200 million and $300 million annually from the 2009 ban, aimed at helping prevent youths ...

U.S. Thumbs Nose at World; Public Citizen Defends Ban on Clove Cigarettes
July 24th was the deadline for the U.S. to comply with a World Trade Organization (WTO) ruling which found that the federal ban on flavored cigarettes - with its exemption for menthol cigarettes - is a discriminatory trade practice because it protects domestic cigarettes with no rational public health justification. The U.S. could have complied either by rescinding the ban on clove cigarettes or extending the ban to cover menthol cigarettes. However, so far the federal government has done neither. Since the deadline has passed without U.S. action, Indonesia may now appeal to the WTO to have trade sanctions implemented again...

Chopped Salad for Better Nutrition
My Aunt Bridie and Uncle Frank from Galway, Ireland introduced me to the chopped salad this spring. I’ve always loved salad and never thought that a salad could be so delicious and magical, so boy was I surprised when I ate their chopped salad. Here’s the most exciting part: a chopped salad delivers far more nutrition than a regular salad. The reason is by chopping it you make more of the nutrients available for your body to absorb. When we chew salad we do a woeful job of actually tearing it apart enough to glean all the nutritional benefits. The other reason why this chopped salad is more nutritious is becaus...

Aromatherapy: The Good Smells That Can Make You Happier
We take the power of scent too lightly. To surround self or surroundings with scent, even demurely, has tremendous potential.   Aromatherapy can play a part in wellness, but its applications go way beyond the massage room at the spa.  Some new takes on good smells — even some that you may recognize — follow below. And believe it or not, research backs up a lot of these findings. For instance, dab a solid-gel flower scent (popularly sold by various makers) on your inner wrist. It can remind you of a behavioral habit you want to transform or bring you to a place of peace amid chaos of the coming day. If you ...

Random Kurdish round-up
I keep thinking I will Get Organised And Do A Proper Post About Kurdistan but, quite frankly, if that goes as well as Getting Organised And Sorting Out My Photographs Period, it’ll never happen. So, on the grounds that something is better than nothing, let me show you some photographs, chosen because I like them and they mean something, and, as my mother says, we’ll make that do. This lady, who speaks no English, and I, who speaks no Kurdish, have a great affection for each other. Mountains! The place where I bought clove necklaces to hang in wardrobes and yarn stashes to keep the beasties away. The man was v...

Getting the garlic blues
Pickler Andrew Dalby responded to one of my recent tweets about not cooking asparagus in lemon juice because it discolours it. He had found that his garlic cloves turned blue when he pickled them in spiced malt vinegar. The discolouration doesn’t mean that the pickles are inedible. Now plant material turning blue in acid (vinegar is weak acetic acid) is the basis of the litmus test and is more obvious with red cabbage, which shuttles between a deep red colour and a definite blue depending on the acidity. So, I assumed that was perhaps what was happening with the garlic, but couldn’t think what would be colourle...

Maria Emmerich’s Protein “Noodle” Lasagna recipe
If you haven’t already stumbled on the fabulous recipes (and photography) of Maria Emmerich, well, then . . . you should! Maria “gets” it: She understands the wheat-free concepts, yet doesn’t make the common blunder made by so many others: incorporating gluten-free junk. So she also develops methods to recreate familiar dishes using 1) no wheat, 2) little to no sugar, and 3) otherwise healthy ingredients. Here’s a recipe from her recent book, The Art of Healthy Eating – Savory: Protein “Noodle” Lasagna 1 pound Italian sausage ¾ lb grass fed ground beef 1/2 small onion, ...

More Standout Foods Take Center Stage
By Amy Campbell At a time when it seems like we're constantly being told what NOT to eat, it's refreshing to know that there are so many healthful, nutritious foods that are available for our enjoyment. So, without further ado, here are a few more for your consideration! Garlic. Garlic is one of those foods that people tend to either love or hate. Its other name is the "stinking rose," which is fitting, given its pungent smell and flavor. Garlic belongs to the same family as onions and leeks, and it's rich in sulfur-containing compounds called thiosulfinates, sulfoxides, and dithiins. Don't worry about what these are, let ...

How Not to Settle Trade Disputes
K. William Watson Last year, the United States lost three cases at the WTO in which domestic regulations were challenged by our trading partners as disguised protectionism.  In each of the three cases—a ban on clove cigarettes, dolphin-safe labels for tuna, and country-of-origin labels for meat—the WTO found that the challenged regulation impacted the competitiveness of foreign goods significantly more than domestic like products and that this discrimination did not further the goals of the regulation.  The United States must amend each of these regulations in the next few months or the complaining governmen...
