Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces in hospitals and long-term care facilities for reducing hospital- and facility-acquired bacterial and viral infections: a systematic review
Conclusion: Ten c-RCTs focused on reducing multiple MDROs and/or HAIs and four had significant reductions. Three c-RCTs reported only patient MRSA colonization rates (o ne significant reductions), and one focused on C. difficile (no significant differences). Standardized primary and secondary outcomes are required for future c-RCTs including detailed biofilm cleaning/disinfection interventions. (Source: Current Awareness Service for Health (CASH))

The Connection Between IBD and Aging
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has long been thought of as an ailment of middle, or even young, adulthood. The chronic illness—which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, and can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, bleeding, and decreased quality of life—impacts about 3.1 million people in the U.S. However, it is far from a disease only of the young and middle-aged. More than a quarter of people with IBD are elderly, a figure that is projected to climb to 30% by 2030, according to a 2021 Gastroenterology & Hepatology article. Even more underappreciated is the growing population of people who ...

Hygienic monitoring in long-term care facilities using ATP, crAssphage, and human noroviruses to direct environmental surface cleaning
Conclusions: Surfaces with high levels of ATP and crAssphage were identified. Quantifying levels of contamination longitudinally and before and after cleaning might enhance infection prevention and control procedures for reducing diarrheal illnesses in LTC facilities. What Causes Rectal Prolapse?
Discussion Rectal prolapse is defined as a herniation of the rectum through the anal verge. In children it is also usually mucosal prolapse and not full thickness. Partial or mucosal prolapse usually is seen as radial folds occurring 1 – 2.5 cm from the anal verge. Full thickness will protrude more than 5 cm. It affects genders equally and occurs most commonly in children under age 4. This is due to vertical course and low position of the anus, looser supporting tissues and less muscular support. These children are more likely to have prolapse but are less likely to have it recur. After age 4 the rectum takes the adu...

Hospital- and System-Wide Interventions for Health Care-Associated Infections: A Systematic Review.
Hospitals face increasing pressure to reduce health care-associated infections (HAI) due to their costs and evidence of preventability. However, there is limited synthesis of evidence regarding interventions that can be successfully implemented hospital- or system-wide. Using Donabedian ' s structure-process-outcome model, we conducted a systematic literature review from 2008 to early 2019, identifying 96 studies with 214 outcomes examining the relationship between hospital- or system-wide interventions and HAIs. This literature ' s methodologic and reporting quality was generally poor. The most common HAIs studied were me...
