Let's Give Thanks and Hope We Haven't Lost the War Against Superbugs
Our holiday season has begun with an ominous report: In China, bacteria with a dangerous new antibiotic-resistance gene have spread from livestock to people. This gene bestows resistance against colistin -- an antibiotic that has become our last hope for treating people infected with some of the worst superbugs. The scariest part is that the gene can make copies of itself and then jump between bacteria. History shows us that these mobile resistance genes can spread around the world quickly, silently hitchhiking in the guts of people and animals or on the surface of food. Consequently, this could be our last Thanksgiving wh...

I-Team: Mass. Families To Share Antibiotic Horror Stories With FDA
BOSTON (CBS) – Fluoroquinolones are a powerful family of antibiotics that can save lives. In serious cases, doctors often don’t have other options. But as the I-Team first reported last year, these drugs can often cause debilitating side effects. Critics maintain they are over-prescribed. On Thursday, the Food and Drug Administration will hold a meeting to consider changing how these drugs are used. Massachusetts families plan on attending to share how these drugs devastated them. Nick Newell will tell federal regulators how his brother Ollie started a downward spiral after taking several doses of Ciprofloxacin. It...

Population Dynamics Analysis of Ciprofloxacin-Persistent S. Typhimurium Cells in a Mouse Model for Salmonella Diarrhea
In vivo, antibiotics are often surprisingly inefficient at eliminating bacterial pathogens. In the case of ciprofloxacin therapy in a Salmonella enterica subspecies 1 serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium, S. Tm) mouse infection model, this has been traced to tolerant bacterial cells surviving in lymph node monocytes (i.e., classical dendritic cells). To analyze the growth characteristics of these persisters, we have developed a population dynamics approach using mixtures of wild-type isogenic tagged strains (WITS) and a computational model. Here, we are providing a detailed description of the inoculum, the infection experim...

Updates to the Adult and Adolescent Opportunistic Infections Guidelines
The Bacterial Enteric Infections section of the Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Opportunistic Infections in HIV-Infected Adults and Adolescents was recently updated. This update provides new data on ciprofloxacin resistance in Shigella sonnei and improved clinical success when Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is treated with vancomycin. Limited data suggest fecal microbiota therapy for recurrent CDI may be safe and successful in HIV-infected patients.   (Source: AIDSinfo At-a-Glance: Offering Information on HIV/AIDS Treatment, Prevention, and Research, A Service of the U.S. Department of Health and...
