Coupling antibiotics with stem cells to fight off bone infections
(Kanazawa University) Researchers from Kanazawa University investigated the effects of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) loaded with the antibiotic ciprofloxacin on osteomyelitis caused by implants. By administering ADSC-loaded ciprofloxacin to the site of bone infection in rats, the researchers found a significant improvement of the infection, as shown by reduced soft tissue swelling, abscess formation, and bone degradation. These findings suggest a potential new therapy for implant-related bone infections that have traditionally been difficult to treat with antibiotics. Test accurately IDs people whose gonorrhea can be cured with simple oral antibiotic
A test designed by UCLA researchers can pinpoint which people with gonorrhea will respond successfully to the inexpensive oral antibiotic ciprofloxacin, which had previously been sidelined over concerns the bacterium that causes the infection was becoming resistant to it.In research published in the peer-reviewed journal Clinical Infectious Diseases,a UCLA-led team found thatof106 subjectsthe test identified as having a strain ofgonorrhea called wild-type gyrA serine, all were cured with a single dose of oral ciprofloxacin. Though the test has been available for three years, this is the first time it has been systematicall...

MIT Scientists Identify Powerful Antibiotic Using Artificial Intelligence
BOSTON (CBS) — Bacteria are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics, but using artificial intelligence, scientists at Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a new powerful antibiotic. Only a few antibiotics have been developed in recent years because the process is costly and time-consuming. But researchers at MIT trained a computer to screen thousands of chemical compounds for their ability to kill bacteria with the low likelihood of hurting human cells. They found one they named halicin, after the AI system in the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey”. “MIT researchers used a machine-...
