Potential role of intratumor bacteria in mediating tumor resistance to the chemotherapeutic drug gemcitabine
Growing evidence suggests that microbes can influence the efficacy of cancer therapies. By studying colon cancer models, we found that bacteria can metabolize the chemotherapeutic drug gemcitabine (2',2'-difluorodeoxycytidine) into its inactive form, 2',2'-difluorodeoxyuridine. Metabolism was dependent on the expression of a long isoform of the bacterial enzyme cytidine deaminase (CDDL), seen primarily in Gammaproteobacteria. In a colon cancer mouse model, gemcitabine resistance was induced by intratumor Gammaproteobacteria, dependent on bacterial CDDL expression, and abrogated by cotreatment with the antibiotic ciprofloxa...

Toothpaste ingredient linked to antibiotic resistance
Conclusion This study mainly explored why bacterial resistance could be common for both quinolone antibiotics like ciprofloxacin and the antibacterial triclosan. It confirmed previous findings that one cause seems to be bacteria developing mutations in the gyrA gene. In the case of quinolones, the mutation alters the enzyme that they normally bind to. Triclosan resistance is largely because the already-mutant bacteria have boosted stress response pathways, or molecular defences. The main finding of this research was that small triclosan concentrations led to resistant E. coli bacteria becoming the more dominant strains m...

Scientists develop test to identify best treatment for gonorrhea
FINDINGSResearchers from UCLA have developed a laboratory test that helps physicians determine which people with gonorrhea may be more treatable with an antibiotic that has not been recommended since 2007 because of concerns that the resistance to the drug was growing.BACKGROUNDGonorrhea has developed increasing resistance to all current antibiotics. Due to the spread of multi-drug resistant gonorrhea, health authorities have declared it one of the top-three urgent threats to public health.Ciprofloxacin was used to combat the sexually transmitted infection until 2007, when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sto...

Cat Scratch Disease
Cat scratch disease is an infection transmitted by cat scratches and bites. The lesion is usually small and less than 1 cm in length. It is normally a benign, self-limiting illness lasting for about 6-12 weeks. It is caused by an exposure to bartonella henselae bacteria. Scratches or bites from an infected cat can cause symptoms in people including swollen and draining lymph nodes, fever, fatigue and headache. Swollen, tender, or hard lymph nodes could be confused with a soft tissue tumor. Regional Lymphadenopathy (main clinical feature) These areas of lymph node concentration include cervical nodes, axillary node...
