Impact of 3D printing materials on mircoalga Chlorella vulgaris
Bioresour Technol. 2023 Sep 29:129807. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2023.129807. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACT3D printing represents a key enabling technology in designing photobioreactors. It allows rapid prototyping of complex geometries at an affordable price. Yet, no study dealt with the biocompatibility of 3D printing material with microalgae. Thus microalga Chlorella vulgaris was cultivated in contact with different 3D printing materials (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styren - ABS, PolyCarbonate Blend - PC-Blend, PolyLactic acid - PLA, and acrylate methacrylate resin). Cell status was analyzed using flow cytometry, fluorometry...

Tea polyphenols inhibit blooms caused by eukaryotic and prokaryotic algae
Ecotoxicol Environ Saf. 2023 Sep 29;265:115531. doi: 10.1016/j.ecoenv.2023.115531. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWith changes in global climate, blooms are becoming more frequent and difficult to control. Therefore, the selection of algal suppressor agents with effective inhibition and environmental safety is of paramount importance. One of the main treatment strategies is to inhibit the release of harmful algal toxins. Tea polyphenols (TP) are natural products that have been widely used in medicine, the environment, and other fields due to their antibacterial and antioxidant properties. To investigate their potential appl...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 2010: Efficacy of White Spot Syndrome Virus Protein VP28-Expressing Chlorella vulgaris as an Oral Vaccine for Shrimp
In this study, we examined the efficacy of VP28, a recombinant WSSV protein expressed in Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris), as an oral shrimp vaccine. When compared with the control group, in which WSSV had a cumulative mortality of 100%, shrimp treated with 5% VP28-expressing C. vulgaris in their feed only had a 20% cumulative mortality rate 12 days after the WSSV challenge. When compared with the nonvaccinated group, the transcription of anti-lipopolysaccharide factor, C-type lectin, and prophenoloxidase genes, which are involved in shrimp defense against WSSV infection, was upregulated 29.6 fold, 15.4 fold, and 11.5 fold...

Unraveling the combined toxicity and removal mechanisms of fluoxetine and sertraline co-contaminants by the freshwater microalga Chlorella pyrenoidosa
This study investigated the combined toxicity of FLX and SER to the growth, photosynthetic activity, and antioxidant system of Chlorella pyrenoidosa and their removal mechanisms. The results showed that FLX and SER strongly inhibited microalgal growth with 96 h EC50 values of 493 and 61.1 μg/L, respectively. Additionally, the combined toxicity of FLX and SER towards microalgal growth exhibited an additive effect. After 4 days of short-term exposure, FLX, SER, and their mixtures caused photosynthetic damage and oxidative stress in microalgae, and the mixture's toxicity was stronger than those of individuals. However, the a...

Photosynthetic conversion of carbon dioxide from cement production to microalgae biomass
In this study, a process of selecting a suitable strain that would effectively utilize carbon dioxide and generate biomass was investigated. A down-selection screening method was applied to 28 strains isolated from the area surrounding a commercial cement plant. In laboratory-scale (1 L) continuous-mode chemostats, observed productivity was > 0.9 g L-1 d-1 for most strains studied. Chlorella sorokiniana (strain SMC-14M) appeared to be the most tolerant to cement kiln gas emissions in situ, delivered under control of a pH-stat system, and was down-selected to further investigate growth and biomass production at large-sca...

Appl Microbiol Biotechnol. 2023 Sep 19. doi: 10.1007/s00253-023-12733-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMicroalgae are excellent sources of biomass containing several important compounds for human and animal nutrition-proteins, lipids, polysaccharides, pigments and antioxidants as well as bioactive secondary metabolites. In addition, they have a great biotechnological potential for nutraceuticals, and pharmaceuticals as well as for CO2 sequestration, wastewater treatment, and potentially also biofuel and biopolymer production. In this review, the industrial production of the most frequently used microalgae genera-Arthrospir...

Adaptive laboratory evolution empowers Chlorella vulgaris strains for sustainable lipids and biomass overproduction for environmental applications
In this report, we demonstrated the adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) by hypersaline conditions to improve the algal strains for increasing the lipid overproduction capacity of Chlorella vulgaris for environmental applications. The evolved strains (namely E2 and E2.5) without notable impairment in general physiological parameters were scrutinized after 35 cycles. Conventional gravimetric lipidomic analysis showed that total lipid accumulation was hiked by 2.2-fold in the ALE strains compared to the parental strains. Confocal observation of algal cells stained with Nile-red showed that the abundance of lipid droplets was ...
