The family of a man who died after having a reaction to an antibiotic reached a half-million-dollar settlement with the Kansas City VA Medical Center.
Craig Beemer told The Kansas City Star that he and his brother reached the settlement in a case against the Kansas City VA center. They sued the medical center after their father, John Beemer, died after suffering a severe reaction to the antibiotic Ceftriaxone.

The patient, who first sought medical care in early 2018, is being treated with an intravenous course of ertapenem, a powerful antibiotic typically used, at least in the U.S., for “serious infections in hospitalized patients,” according to the National Institutes of Health. Gonorrhea in China shows waning susceptibility to WHO-recommended antibiotics
(PLOS) Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains resistant to azithromycin and/or with decreased susceptibility to ceftriaxone are common in China, according to a prevalence study published this week in PLOS Medicine. The study also showed that the prevalence of dual resistance in N. gonorrhoeae isolates increased from 2013 to 2016. The results suggest that dual therapy with azithromycin and ceftriaxone, recommended by WHO and many countries to treat gonorrhea, may not prove effective in China. Prehospital antibiotics in the ambulance for sepsis: a multicentre, open label, randomised trial
This Dutch Randomised Controlled Trial (n=2698) found that ceftriaxone 200mg IV delivered in the ambulance did not improve 28 day mortality vs antibiotics initiated in the emergency department (ED) (8% vs 8%). Gonorrhea Becoming More Difficult To Treat With Antibiotics
CBS Local — Gonorrhea is becoming more difficult to treat with antibiotics and for some patients it’s become impossible, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.
Three forms of bacteria known as “superbugs” that cannot be killed by the best available gonorrhea medicine have been detected in Spain, France and Japan, according to the WHO.
“The bacteria that cause gonorrhea are particularly smart. Every time we use a new class of antibiotics to treat the infection, the bacteria evolve to resist them,” said Teodora Wi, a human reproduction specialist for the WHO, in a press release.
