Emerging Extended-Spectrum Cephalosporin Resistance in
Over the last several decades, Neisseria gonorrhoeae has sequentially developed resistance to the agents recommended by the CDC and the Public Health Service for the treatment of gonorrhea. During the 1970s and through the 1990s, penicillin, tetracyclines, and the fluoroquinolones were recommended and subsequently removed as the therapy of choice for gonorrhea, leaving intramuscular ceftriaxone and the oral cephalosporin cefixime as the sole agents recommended for treatment of gonorrhea in 2010. What Are Risk Factors for Cholelithiasis?
Discussion Bile is produced by the liver to aid absorption of fat soluble vitamins and lipids from the gastrointestinal tract and to transport bilirubin, cholesterol and other substances to the gastrointestinal tract. Bile is the main form of cholesterol excretion. Gallstones or cholelithiasis form when the balance of substances within the hepatobiliary tract favors supersaturation with crystal formation and gallstone formation. It is a dynamic state of affairs as gallstones can form and also have a high rate of resorption of up to 50%. Gallstones 3 mm are called gallstones. Gallstones, while not as common as adult popul...

Determination of Antimicrobial Resistance in Salmonella spp.
Infections with Salmonella are an important public health problem worldwide. Salmonella are one of the most common causes of food-borne illness in humans. There are many types of Salmonella but they can be divided into two broad categories: those that cause typhoid and those that do not. The typhoidal Salmonella (TS), such as S. enterica subsp. enterica serovars Typhi and S. Paratyphi only colonize humans and are usually acquired by the consumption of food or water contaminated with human fecal material. The much broader group of non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) usually results from improperly handled food that has been cont...

The Threat of Antibiotic Resistance - CDC video
This animated video highlights the key points and graphics of the CDC report Antibiotic Threats in the United States, 2013.For example, gonorrhea is getting harder to treat and antibiotic resistance is pushing Neisseria gonorrhoeae toward superbug status. The current drugs of choice, ceftriaxone and cefixime, are still very effective but there are signs that resistance, particularly to cefixime, is emerging and soon these drugs may not be a good choice.Only one remaining class of antibiotics is recommended for the treatment of gonorrhea - cephalosporins. Historically, gonorrhea has progressively developed resistance to the...

Comparing penicillin and 'big gun' antibiotics for treating less severe childhood pneumonia
Children hospitalized for pneumonia have similar outcomes, including length of stay and costs, regardless of whether they are treated with "big gun" antibiotics such as ceftriaxone or cefotaxime or more narrowly focused antibiotics such as ampicillin or penicillin, according to a Vanderbilt study published in Pediatrics.Study authors said the findings are important because pneumonia is one of the most common reasons for hospitalization among U.S. children and because broad-spectrum antibiotics are frequently over-prescribed, leading to antibiotic resistance.
