Spiration Valve for Severe Emphysema Approved in U.S.
Olympus landed FDA approval for its Spiration Valve System, a product designed to treat people suffering from severe emphysema. It’s used to perform bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR) procedures, which channel air away from hyperinflated portions of the lungs to healthier areas. In many patients this results in easier breathing and considerably improved quality of life. The implantation procedure is minimally invasive and the flexible valve can be positioned in pretty challenging airways, including in the upper lobe segments. The system has European approval already for treating of air leaks and severe, hete...

In conclusion, this is the first report to show that pyroptotic cell death occurs in the aging brain and that the inflammasome can be a viable target to decrease the oxidative stress that occurs as a result of aging. Reducing Levels of Protein Manufacture Slows Measures of Aging in Nematodes https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2018/12/reducing-levels-of-protein-manufacture-slows-measures-of-aging-in-nematodes/ Researchers here demonstrate that an antibiotic slows aging in nematode worms, providing evidence for it to work through a reduction in protein synthesis. Beyond a slowing of aging, one of the co...

Battling the Barriers in EP/Cath Labs
The following is a guest blog post by Tom Downes, CEO of Quail Digital. Clear and unambiguous communication between team members is an essential component of any surgical environment. It’s particularly important – and indeed particularly challenging – in cath labs and electrophysiology (EP) labs where physicians and clinical staff in interventional cardiovascular and other minimally-invasive therapeutics are typically spread across multiple rooms and physically separated by lead-lined doors. But as patient demand continues to rapidly grow, the inherent complexities of the surgical environment are presenting ...

This study is the culmination of a decade of research that has repeatedly demonstrated that this vaccine can effectively and safely target in animal models what we think may cause Alzheimer's disease. I believe we're getting close to testing this therapy in people." Although earlier research established that antibodies significantly reduce amyloid buildup in the brain, researchers needed to find a safe way to introduce them into the body. A vaccine developed elsewhere showed promise in the early 2000s, but when tested in humans, it caused brain swelling in some patients. The new idea was to start with DNA coding for...

Medtronic ’s Valiant Navion Thoracic Stent Graft Cleared in EU
Medtronic won European CE Mark approval to introduce its Valiant Navion thoracic stent graft for treating lesions within the descending thoracic aorta such as thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAA), blunt traumatic aortic injuries (BTAI), and penetrating atherosclerotic ulcers (PAU). The system received FDA approval in October of this year. The Valiant Navion is particularly beneficial for patients with narrow iliac arteries, in whom previously developed minimally invasive access could has been difficult and additional procedures may have been required just to get started. The new product is based on the Valiant Captivia thora...
