Bonobos, the ‘hippie chimps,’ might not be so mellow after all
It was 5 a.m., and Maud Mouginot was waiting for the Sun to rise over the Kokolopori Bonobo Reserve. Suddenly, two male bonobos—close relatives of chimpanzees—came hurtling out of the darkness, one rushing through the trees, the other giving chase. The terrified cries of the fleeing male suggested this was no friendly game of tag. Mouginot, a biological anthropologist at Boston University, hadn’t expected such behavior from bonobos, which, unlike chimps, have a reputation for making love, not war . But research by Mouginot and colleagues, published today in Current Biology , shows male ...

Intra ‐Articular Mineralization on Computerized Tomography of the Knee and Risk of Cartilage Damage: The Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study
ConclusionCT-detected IA mineralization in the cartilage was associated with higher risk of MRI cartilage worsening in the same compartment and subregion over two years. These findings suggest potential localized, tissue-specific effects of IA mineralization on cartilage pathology in knee OA. (Source: Arthritis and Rheumatology)

The mmu_circ_003062, hsa_circ_0075663/miR-490-3p/CACNA1H axis mediates apoptosis in renal tubular cells in association with endoplasmic reticulum stress following ischemic acute kidney injury
CONCLUSION: The involvement of mmu_circ_003062, hsa_circ_0075663/miR-490-3p/CACNA1H/GRP78 and CHOP axis is significant in the development of ischemic AKI. Moreover, hsa_circ_0075663 has potential as an early diagnostic biomarker.PMID:38554447 | DOI:10.1016/j.intimp.2024.111956 (Source: International Immunopharmacology)

Congress is using more science, but the two parties rarely cite the same studies
Researchers often criticize U.S. lawmakers for ignoring scientific evidence when it comes to writing legislation aimed at challenges such as climate change, gun violence, and access to health care. But members of Congress and their staffers are consuming plenty of research, judging by the number of citations to technical papers found in committee documents over the past few decades, a study finds. At the same time, however, the researchers found that Democrats and Republicans rarely reference the same papers —a form of polarization they say may limit opportunities to improve policies and solve problems. ...

‘A tough experience.’ Why would a scientist serve as an expert witness?
Late last year, the sound of scientific argument echoed through a New York City courtroom packed with legal and financial experts. Studies from top epidemiology journals flashed onto large screens, as lawyers debated their statistical power and whether their conclusions rested on “cherry-picked” data. Billions of dollars were at stake. The scientists themselves were absent, and attorneys argued on their behalf. But the crucial issue was whether some of the scientists would be allowed to appear at a future trial, where they would tell jurors that children had developed autism or attention-deficit/hyperactivi...

LGBTQ+ Faculty, Queering Health Sciences Classrooms: Student Perspectives
Adv Physiol Educ. 2024 Feb 22. doi: 10.1152/advan.00200.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTQueer students in undergraduate STEM majors are more likely to drop out than their cisgender, heterosexual peers despite having equivalent grades and research exposure. It has been demonstrated that sense of belonging, a very strong predictor of student retention, is low in queer-identified STEM undergraduates. It has further been posited that faculty openness and authenticity can enhance sense of belonging for queer students through the creation of an inclusive classroom culture. The authors of this article, three queer-identified ...
