Reasons for rejection of rhinoplasty seeking patients: a multicentre observational study
CONCLUSION: This study highlights the variety of reasons for which patients seeking rhinoplasty are not considered good candidates for a rhinoplasty, with patient-related factors being more prevalent than nose-related and other factors. Increasing awareness on the impact of adequate patient selection for rhinoplasty may contribute to better outcomes in rhinoplasty.PMID:37805988 | DOI:10.4193/Rhin22.378 (Source: Rhinology)

A qualitative exploration of the lived experiences of Body Dysmorphic Disorder
Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is characterized by an intense preoccupation with one or more perceived “defects” in physical appearance. Despite the distress and impairment associated with BDD, the disorder remains understudied and poorly understood. In particular, there are limited studies available which give voice to those with firsthand experiences of the disorder. A qualitative approach was employed to study lived experience of BDD. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 participants with BDD, aiming to understand their subjective experiences of the disorder. Data was analyzed using Interpretat...

Could Social Network Influence the Body Perception and Develop Dysmorphophobia?
AbstractThe concept of body beauty has evolved significantly over the years, reflecting cultural shifts, societal norms, and changing ideals. Unlike the gradual evolution of body perception seen in the past eras, the advent of social media has accelerated the pace of change dramatically. The virtual realm, while offering platforms for self-expression, has also bred a culture of comparison, unrealistic standards, and heightened self-consciousness. Scientific literature agrees on the increased prevalence of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), particularly in Caucasian women, finding a strong association between this and the use ...

“Belief of Splitting of Clitoris”: A Case Report of an Adolescent Girl with Body Dysmorphic Disorder
AbstractBody dysmorphic disorder (BDD) was first described centuries ago, but it is still unknown to many clinicians. Although onset of body dysmorphic disorder occurs in adolescent age, BDD has received very little attention in adolescent psychiatry literature. Here, we are discussing a case report of 14-year girl suffering from belief of splitting of her clitoris. She would watch it in mirror multiple times and feel disgust due to her malformed genital part. She would often become very distressed and force her family member for genital surgery. She was taken to gynaecologist. She was referred and treated successfully wit...

Body Dysmorphic Disorder and Self-esteem in Adolescents and Young Adults with Acne Vulgaris
The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of body dysmorphic disorder and assess self-esteem among a clinical sample of adolescents and young adults being managed for acne vulgaris. A total of 105 patients, age range 13-24 years, receiving acne treatment at 1 of 2 dermatology outpatient clinic were included. A self-report questionnaire was used, which included a body dysmorphic disorder screening tool (based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) diagnostic criteria) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). Acne was graded with the Cook's acne grading scale. Out of 105 adol...

Adaptation and validation of the muscle dysmorphic disorder inventory in a population of French athletes (MDDI-Fr)
CONCLUSION: The translation, as well as the validation of the MDDI-Fr structured with 13 items and three dimensions, showed significantly satisfying results for its adaptation in French in a population of French men and women practicing weight training. However, the "Appearance Intolerance" dimension shows moderate links with the global tool, which should be investigated in future studies. Although the psychometric properties of the MDDI-Fr are promising, additional research is needed to gain a better understanding of gender differences in the results, especially for the DFS dimension.PMID:37604719 | DOI:10.1016/j.encep.20...

Dermatology in Contemporary Times: Building Awareness of Social Media's Association With Adolescent Skin Disease and Mental Health
Conclusions: The association with negative life events, BDD, suicidal ideation, depression, and anxiety are thought to be high for adolescent patients with acne or AD. Using social media for information has both positive and negative aspects. Awareness of the risks and benefits of receiving health information about dermatological disease among adolescents needs to be improved through the education of patients and clinicians. Action-oriented items need to be developed to help dermatologists address these issues in clinical practice.Rieder EA, Andriessen A, Cutler V, et al.
