A Case Report of Body Dysmorphic Disorder and Illness Anxiety Disorder: Perspectives From: DSM-5: and: ICD-11
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a mental illness currently classified as part of the “Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders” (OCRD) chapter in both the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5) and in the ICD-11. This is not the case for illness anxiety disorder/hypochondriasis (IAD/HC), as IAD is classified in the chapter “Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders” in DSM-5, and in ICD-11, under the name HC, it is classified along with BDD in the OCRD chapter. Identity - A critical but neglected construct in cognitive-behaviour therapy
J Behav Ther Exp Psychiatry. 2023 Mar;78:101808. doi: 10.1016/j.jbtep.2022.101808. Epub 2022 Nov 23.ABSTRACTIn cognitive-behaviour therapy attention paid to the self and identity has primarily involved self-representations (the Me-Self) rather than how the self is experienced (the I-Self). Within the I-Self experiences vary on a continuum from pre-reflective consciousness (raw experienced perceptions and states of being) to self-awareness (permitting reflection on and evaluation of subjective experience). There is considerable evidence that the I-Self is affected in many if not all disorders, and I review illustrative stud...

Effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in patients with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD)
Patients with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) experience significant distress and often have suicidal ideation and behavior.[1] BDD is an obsessive-compulsive related disorder and is characterized by a (delusional) preoccupation concerning presumed or minor flaws in appearance. Patients experience obsessions regarding their appearance which are often accompanied by compulsive behavior, like mirror-checking [2]. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the most prevalent comorbidity in BDD, with a lifetime prevalence of 76% [3]. In the past decade, Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and interventions that foster self-compassion have shown promise for reducing the negative effects of shame in a range of clinical problems. The aim of the present study was to develop and evalu...

Aesthetic Penile Augmentation Procedures: A Comprehensive and Current Perspective
AbstractPurpose of ReviewSome men experience small penis syndrome (SPS), a body dysmorphic disorder in which a patient believes their penis to be small even when it is clinically average. As cosmetic surgery becomes more widely accepted, management of SPS may present a challenge for urologists. We aim to provide an updated review of aesthetic penile augmentation procedures.Recent FindingsAugmentation procedures range from invasive to noninvasive. Surgical solutions include grafts and flaps, suspensory ligament release, and suprapubic lipectomy. Minimally invasive solutions include injections of fillers (hyaluronic acid, po...

The Humanistic Approach to Aging and the Plastic Surgeon’s Role
The humanistic approach, including literature and arts, could be a tool for understanding the patient’s mindset and establishing the surgeon’s role. Dorian Gray syndrome, derived from a novel written by Oscar Wilde is a disease with three diagnostic criteria: body dysmorphic disorder, narcissistic regression, and denial of the maturation process. Suppressing patients’ quest for youth is not possible by psychiatric methods. Title of “No Country for Old Men,” written by Cormac McCarthy, was derived from the poem “Sailing to Byzantium,” which William Butler Yeats. Yeats desires to sail to Byzantium, which is a ...
