Blueberry intervention mitigates detrimental microbial metabolite trimethylamine N-oxide by modulating gut microbes
Biofactors. 2023 Nov 3. doi: 10.1002/biof.2014. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGut microbes play a pivotal role in host physiology by producing beneficial or detrimental metabolites. Gut bacteria metabolize dietary choline and L-carnitine to trimethylamine (TMA) which is then converted to trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO). An elevated circulating TMAO is associated with diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and cancer in humans. In the present study, we investigated the effect of dietary blueberries and strawberries at a nutritional dosage on TMA/TMAO production and the possible role of gut microbes. Blueberry cohort mice ...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 7344: Microcapsules and Nanoliposomes Based Strategies to Improve the Stability of Blueberry Anthocyanins
In this study, blueberry anthocyanin microcapsules (BAM) and blueberry anthocyanin liposomes (BAL) were fabricated based on blueberry anthocyanins. Film dispersion methods were used to prepare the BAL. Their preparation processes were optimized and compared to improve the stability of the blueberry anthocyanins following exposure to light and high temperatures. The BAM were prepared through complex phase emulsification. The blueberry anthocyanins were protected by the shell materials composed of sodium alginate after being formed into BAM. Under the optimal conditions, the embedding rate of BAM and BAL can reach as high as...

Three anthocyanin-rich berry extracts regulate the in vitro digestibility of corn starch: Physicochemical properties, structure and α-amylase
This study aimed to compare the regulatory effects of blue honeysuckle anthocyanins (BHA), blueberry anthocyanins (BBA), and blackcurrant anthocyanins (BCA) on the in vitro digestibility of corn starch in terms of starch physicochemical properties and structure, as well as α-amylase inhibition. The results revealed that adding all three anthocyanins lowered digestibility in the following order: BHA > BCA > BBA. The terminal digestibility (C∞) decreased from 73.84 % to 57.3 % with the addition of 10 % BHA, while the resistant starch (RS) content increased from 4.39 % to 48.82 %. Fourier transform infrared spectrosc...

Development, characterization and functional properties of sodium alginate-based films incorporated with Schisandra chinensis extract-natamycin complex
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Oct 14:127435. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.127435. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBecause of the impact of petroleum-based polymers on environmental deterioration and the need for safe, efficient, and functional packaging films, a sodium alginate (SA)-based film incorporating a Schisandra chinensis extract (SCE)-natamycin (NA) complex was developed for the desired physical and functional properties. The incorporation of SCE-NA into SA-based films decreased the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), moisture content (MC), and hydrophilicity of the films and improved their opacity, elongation at brea...

Sensors, Vol. 23, Pages 8412: A Green Approach to Natural Dyes in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells
This study investigated natural dyes from cost-effective and environmentally friendly blueberries and mulberries. These dyes were utilized as alternative sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Alongside the natural dyes, a green approach was adopted for the DSSC design, encompassing TiO2 photoanodes, eco-friendly electrolytes, and green counter-electrodes created from graphite pencils and candle soot. Consequently, the best-optimized dye sensitizer was mulberry, with an output power of 13.79 µW and 0.122 µW for outdoor and indoor environments, respectively. This study underscored th...

Biological Characteristics of < em > Beauveria majiangensis < /em > Strain MJ1015 and Optimization of Solid Medium Technology for Sporulation
Pol J Microbiol. 2023 Oct 10. doi: 10.33073/pjm-2023-033. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria majiangensis strain MJ1015, recently isolated from white grubs on a blueberry farm in Guizhou, China, could be used as a biocontrol agent. As a first step toward determining the effect of different solid culture media, temperature, and pH on colony growth rate and sporulation, we evaluated the optimum solid medium for mycelial growth and conidia production on a commercial scale. Subsequently, we also used single-factor analysis and response surface optimization to optimize the composition of the sol...
