Bergapten ameliorates combined allergic rhinitis and asthma syndrome after PM2.5 exposure by balancing Treg/Th17 expression and suppressing STAT3 and MAPK activation in a mouse model
This study created a model in which CARAS was exacerbated by PM2.5 exposure, in BALB/c mice and explored the potential of bergapten as a therapeutic agent. The bergapten medication increased ovalbumin (OVA)-specific immunoglobulin (Ig) G2a level in serum and decreased OVA-specific IgE and IgG1 expression. Clinical nasal symptoms diminished significantly, with weakened inflammatory reaction in both the nasal mucosa and lungs. Furthermore, bergapten controlled the T helper (Th)1 to Th2 ratio by increasing cytokines associated with Th1-like interleukin (IL)-12 and interferon gamma and decreasing the Th2 cytokines IL-4, IL-5, ...

Biological effects of bergamot and its potential therapeutic use as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer agent
Conclusions: Considering the effects of bergamot and its new formulations, we affirm the importance of its rational use in humans and illustrate how bergamot can be utilized in clinical applications. Numerous studies evaluated the effect of new bergamot formulations that can affect the absorption and, therefore, the final effects by altering the therapeutic profile of bergamot and enhancing the scientific knowledge of bergamot.PMID:37067190 | DOI:10.1080/13880209.2023.2197010 (Source: Pharmaceutical Biology)

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 2964: Chemical, Nutritional and Biological Evaluation of a Sustainable and Scalable Complex of Phytochemicals from Bergamot By-Products
ni Giovanna Baron The present paper reports a sustainable raw material obtained from the by-products derived from the industrial production of bergamot (Citrus × Bergamia Risso & Poiteau) essential oils. The procedure to obtain the raw material is designed to maintain as much of the bioactive components as possible and to avoid expensive chemical purification. It consists of spray-drying the fruit juice obtained by squeezing the fruits, which is mixed with the aqueous extract of the pulp, i.e., the solid residue remained after fruit pressing. The resulting powder bergamot juice (PBJ) contain...

Computational docking investigation of phytocompounds from bergamot essential oil against Serratia marcescens protease and FabI: Alternative pharmacological strategy
Comput Biol Chem. 2023 Feb 15;104:107829. doi: 10.1016/j.compbiolchem.2023.107829. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe rapid development of multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogens adds urgency to search for novel and safe drugs having promising action on new and re-emerging infectious pathogens. Serratia marcescens is an MDR pathogen that causes several-healthcare associated infections. Curbing bacterial virulence, rather than inhibiting its growth, is a promising strategy to diminish the pathogenesis of infectious bacteria, reduce the development of antimicrobial resistance, and boost the host immune power to eradicate infecti...

Narirutin. A flavonoid found in citrus fruits modulates cell cycle phases and inhibits the proliferation of hormone-refractory prostate cancer cells by targeting hyaluronidase
Food Chem Toxicol. 2023 Jan 25:113638. doi: 10.1016/j.fct.2023.113638. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNarirutin is a dietary flavanone found in lemons, oranges, passion fruit, bergamot and grapefruit. It possesses anti-allergic, cardioprotective, neuroprotective, hepatoprotective potential, and its enriched fraction suppresses the growth of prostate cancer cells; however, there is currently no information on the chemopreventive potential of narirutin alone against hormone-refractory prostate cancer cells (PC-3) and its mode of action. Thus, the chemopreventive possibility of narirutin was investigated in PC-3 cells by utili...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 901: Plant Essential Oils as Healthy Functional Ingredients of Nutraceuticals and Diet Supplements: A Review
migli Essential oils (EOs) are mixtures of volatile molecules endowed with health-promoting biological activities that go beyond their role as aromas and natural preservatives and can be exploited to develop functional foods and diet supplements. Their composition is briefly addressed along with regulatory aspects. The potential health benefit of human diet supplementation with EOs is outlined through a review of the recent literature on available clinical trials and preclinical research concerning EOs activity towards: (1) irritable bowel syndrome; (2) inflammatory bowel disease; (3) regulation of microbiota; (4) gast...
