Does Anxiety Cause PTSD or Does PTSD Cause Anxiety?
“PTSD is a whole-body tragedy, an integral human event of enormous proportions with massive repercussions.” ― Susan Pease Banitt This question came up in conversation when I was speaking with someone who has experienced severe panic attacks to the point of calling them “debilitating”, requiring inpatient care.  As they were sharing about the ordeal, they told me that when they contemplate the time spent seeking treatment and the aftermath, it ramped up both the anxiety and PTSD symptoms. Even as a career therapist with decades of experience treating people with stand-alone anxiety, with no overt PTSD s...

Is Lush Fair Trade Honey shampoo really preservative free?
Rachel says…After reading your articles about the importance of preservatives in cosmetics I’m always worried about the so-called “preservative-free” products. I’d love to try Lush’s honey shampoo but it’s expensive and I’m worried that it won’t keep very long without preservatives. Can you shed any light on this?  The Beauty Brains respond:  The Lush website explains that 50% of this shampoo formula consists of honey. Honey is self-preserving because it has a very low water-activity (0.6). Essentially this means that there’s not enough water in the product for ...

Playboy VIP Perfume: In the Beauty Brains Bathroom
Speaking of perfume (as I was earlier today in the  post Why Does Perfume Make me Sneeze),  Coty is launching two new Playboy themed scents in honor of founder Hugh Hefner’s upcoming nuptials. Playboy VIP for Her is a joyful fragrance full of floral contrasts and sparkling ingredients that surprise, thrill and exude sensuality with a playful touch. A scintillating mélange of subtle musk and sandalwood, Playboy VIP for Her delivers a lingering, tempting scent for women with luxurious taste.
