Silicon Photonics Device to Screen for Arterial Stiffness: Interview with Roel Baets and Patrick Segers, Imec and Ghent University
Imec, a research and innovation hub for nanoelectronics and digital technologies based in Belgium, in collaboration with numerous partners, has developed a new medical device to screen for arterial stiffness, a risk-factor for cardiovascular disease. Routine screening of arterial stiffness in a doctor’s office is currently impossible, meaning that this risk-factor is underused in the fight against cardiovascular disease. The new device is based on silicon photonics and could enable minimally skilled medical staff to easily and non-invasively assess patients for arterial stiffness at the point of care. The silicon photoni...

IVF Externalities
This post co-authored with Robert J. Stillman, M.D., FACOG, Medical Director, Emeritus of Shady Grove Fertility, Rockville, MD.A recent article in theAmerican Economic Reviewexamines externalities —behaviors that impose unpriced costs on third parties—in the context ofin vitro fertilization (IVF).[1] Patients often pay for IVF treatment out of pocket while the costs associated with birth are almost always covered by insurance. Because of this difference in who pays, and how patient choices can impact the size of birth costs, externalities are created when patients ’ decisions impose increased costs on third parties.P...

Patch with Non-Toxic Battery Monitors ECG, Blood Oxygen, Physical Activity
At CES 2019, imec, a Belgian organization, and the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research, presented their latest vitals monitoring patch. The disposable device has a monitoring lifetime of over a week, but since the battery is made of non-toxic materials there’s not a big environmental impact. The device has a basic ECG built-in, can measure blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), a newly introduced feature, physical activity thanks to an accelerometer, and it also sports a bioelectrical impedance monitor. It is smaller, more comfortable, and much cheaper to manufacture than the previous model that was p...

8 Ways to Hear Your Own Voice
For the last 12 years, I have kept a binder full of advice from friends and mental health professionals. After every doctor’s visit or coffee date, I would scribble down notes of what they said so that I could access their words when I needed them. Similarly, I kept a self-esteem file, full of positive comments from readers and loving notes from friends to pump me up when I needed reassurance and validation that I was a decent person who ought to stick around. We all need to rely on doctors, psychologists, and friends to guide us. The gems inside my binder and file afforded me great reassurance in times of darkness. Howe...

Digital Health Trends: What To Expect In 2019?
Discussions about a global FDA In recent years, with the digitization of healthcare and the spread of communication technologies, the idea of borderless health started to emerge, and we expect it to reach a tipping point and represent a widespread practice instead of a sporadic phenomenon soon. The Medical Futurist expects to see the increase in the supply and demand of cross-border health services in the coming months. Just imagine a French patient sending a tissue of his tumor to a Belgian company specializing in precision diagnostics. They establish that a Swiss pharma company has the exact type of clinical trial that t...

Healthcare And Medicine Needs A Global FDA
Globalization reached healthcare big time: a French patient can easily ask a Belgian company to sequence the DNA of his tumor tissue, then convince a Swiss pharma company to sign them up for a relevant clinical trial on a Spanish island. Not only that but also the recent controversies around gene editing in babies in China, as well as the operation of direct-to-consumer genetic testing companies, the online medication scene, health technology companies expanding their services to other countries highlight the need for a global “FDA” day by day. We are not waiting for regulators The availability of know-how, raw materia...
