Separation and confinement anxiety in a golden retriever × standard poodle dog
Can Vet J. 2024 Feb;65(2):141-145.ABSTRACTAn 8-month-old spayed female golden retriever × standard poodle dog was presented for assessment because of vocalization, destructive behavior, and urination when left home alone and confined in a crate. Previous treatments included multiple medications, graduated departures, decoupling of departure cues, and punishmentbased techniques. Adverse reactions to paroxetine and lorazepam were noted before successful treatment with clomipramine, "safe haven" training, and behavior modification. Key clinical message: Separation anxiety is a common behavioral disorder in dogs. It is often ...

GPR68-ATF4 signaling is a novel prosurvival pathway in glioblastoma activated by acidic extracellular microenvironment
ConclusionThese results indicate GPR68 emerges as a critical sensor for an autocrine pro-tumorigenic signaling cascade triggered by extracellular acidification in glioblastoma cells. In this context, GPR68 suppresses ATF4, inhibition of GPR68 increases expression of ATF4 which leads to ferroptotic cell death. These findings provide a promising therapeutic approach to selectively induce ferroptosis in glioblastoma cells while sparing healthy neural tissue. (Source: Experimental Hematology and Oncology)

Impact of a Divided Phenobarbital Load and Taper Compared With Lorazepam Symptom Triggered Therapy in Hospitalized Patients
CONCLUSION AND RELEVANCE: This study is novel because of the broad application of a phenobarbital order set across multiple levels of care and patient admission diagnoses. A risk targeted split load intravenous phenobarbital order set can safely be administered to patients with fewer escalations of care, seizures, delirium tremens, and respiratory care escalation.PMID:38258797 | DOI:10.1177/10600280231222294 (Source: The Annals of Pharmacotherapy)

Memantine-responsive catatonia secondary to tuberculosis, neurocysticercosis, and pneumococcal pneumonia: A case series
Indian J Psychiatry. 2023 Nov;65(11):1197-1199. doi: 10.4103/indianjpsychiatry.indianjpsychiatry_696_23. Epub 2023 Nov 24.ABSTRACTCatatonia, a psychomotor disorder, can have underlying psychiatric and medical etiologies. Around 29% of the catatonias with medical etiologies are related to either infectious or immune causes. Benzodiazepines like lorazepam and electroconvulsive therapy are the conventional treatment modalities for catatonia. In this case series, three cases of catatonia secondary to pulmonary tuberculosis, pneumococcal pneumonia, and neurocysticercosis have been described, in which conventional treatment moda...

Recurrent cannabis-induced catatonia: a case report and comprehensive systematic literature review
ConclusionThe connection between cannabis and catatonia is intricate and not entirely comprehended. Although cannabis possesses therapeutic advantages, it can paradoxically trigger catatonia in certain individuals. Multiple factors, such as genetics, cannabinoids, and neurotransmitter systems, contribute to this intricacy, underscoring the necessity for additional research. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Morphine concentrations in fatalities after palliative treatment of acute burn injury
AbstractThe evaluation of a morphine concentration in postmortem blood is routine for a forensic toxicologist. We here report three fatal cases where we found high morphine concentrations with 7.96, 4.30, and 5.82  mg/l in femoral blood that have to be estimated as unusually high. All these individuals died due to severe burn injuries and obtained morphine in the context of their palliative care in the last hours of their lives. According to the autopsy results, the cause of death in case 1 was burn disease with burns of about 90% of the body surface area (BSA), case 2 burn trauma, and case 3 burn shock. Besides morphine,...

When the fever will not stop, stop the pills! A case report
CONCLUSION: Antipsychotic agents are commonly employed to manage behavioral changes linked to various disorders. However, their severe side effects necessitate a high degree of vigilance, the cessation of all medications, and the implementation of supportive care measures. A prompt and accurate diagnosis of NMS is crucial to alleviating the severe, prolonged morbidity and potential mortality associated with this syndrome.PMID:38055420 | DOI:10.1590/1516-3180.2022.0401.R1.13032023 (Source: Sao Paulo Medical Journal)
