Smartphone use for Paediatric Calculations in Emergencies (SPaCE)
Conclusions Traditional methods of ‘WETFLAG’ drug and fluid calculations are associated with a statistically significant increased risk of error compared with the use of reference charts or smartphone app. The smartphone app proved significantly faster and less stressful to use compared with traditional calculation methods or reference charts. Catatonia as a Result of a Traumatic Brain Injury
Case Rep Psychiatry. 2024 Mar 6;2024:5184741. doi: 10.1155/2024/5184741. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTCatatonia is a neuropsychiatric syndrome typically marked by disturbances in motor activity, speech, and behavior. It has historically been associated with psychiatric illness, but acute medical illness, neurocognitive disorders, and neurodevelopmental disorders can cause catatonia as well. Catatonia is likely underrecognized and underdiagnosed in the general medical hospital, despite high risks of morbidity and mortality and the availability of rapidly effective treatment. Here, we present a case of catatonia secondary to tra...

Benzodiazepines for the Treatment of Seizure Clusters
AbstractPatients with epilepsy may experience seizure clusters, which are described by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as intermittent, stereotypic episodes of frequent seizure activity that are distinct from a patient ’s usual seizure pattern. Untreated seizure clusters may increase the risk for status epilepticus, as well as decrease quality of life and increase burden on patients and care partners. Benzodiazepine therapies are the mainstay for acute treatment of seizure clusters and are often administered by nonmedical care partners outside a healthcare facility. Three rescue therapies are currently FDA-appr...

US Generic Antiseizure Medication Supply Chain: Observations from Analysis of US Government Databases
In 2015, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimated that in the U.S., 1.2% of the population have active epilepsy (including 3 million adults and approximately 500,000 children).[1] Over 25 antiseizure medications (ASM) are currently approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).[2] During a critical shortage of an ASM, the feasibility of a rapid transition to an alternate ASM is often difficult.[3] The FDA drug shortage database in July 2023 indicated a national shortage of ASMs often used in status epilepticus, including rectal diazepam, oral clonazepam, and intravenous preparations of lorazepam, m...

Separation and confinement anxiety in a golden retriever × standard poodle dog
Can Vet J. 2024 Feb;65(2):141-145.ABSTRACTAn 8-month-old spayed female golden retriever × standard poodle dog was presented for assessment because of vocalization, destructive behavior, and urination when left home alone and confined in a crate. Previous treatments included multiple medications, graduated departures, decoupling of departure cues, and punishmentbased techniques. Adverse reactions to paroxetine and lorazepam were noted before successful treatment with clomipramine, "safe haven" training, and behavior modification. Key clinical message: Separation anxiety is a common behavioral disorder in dogs. It is often ...
