Adverse Food Reactions: Physiological and Ecological Perspectives
Annu Rev Nutr. 2024 May 9. doi: 10.1146/annurev-nutr-061021-022909. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWhile food is essential for survival, it can also cause a variety of harmful effects, ranging from intolerance to specific nutrients to celiac disease and food allergies. In addition to nutrients, foods contain myriads of substances that can have either beneficial or detrimental effects on the animals consuming them. Consequently, all animals evolved defense mechanisms that protect them from harmful food components. These "antitoxin" defenses have some parallels with antimicrobial defenses and operate at a cost to the animal's...

Evaluation of treatment and long-term management of anaphylaxis in pediatric departments of Greece: a 2-year nationwide survey
CONCLUSIONS: This nationwide study highlighted the necessity of further improvement in terms of anaphylaxis treatment and secondary prevention measures. This presupposes appropriate education and training of healthcare professionals, thus contributing to proper and comprehensive care of the pediatric population.PMID:38721950 | DOI:10.15586/aei.v52i3.1032 (Source: Allergologia et Immunopathologia)

A real-world cross-sectional study evaluating the role of an oral amino acid-based supplement in nutrient intake by preschoolers on a cow's milk elimination diet
CONCLUSIONS: The use of a complete oral amino acid-based supplement has a positive effect on the diet quality of preschoolers on cow's milk elimination diet because of food allergy, promoting higher intake of energy, calcium, vitamin D, and other essential nutrients.PMID:38721954 | DOI:10.15586/aei.v52i3.1053 (Source: Allergologia et Immunopathologia)

Role of serum-specific immunoglobulin E in egg allergy: a comprehensive study of Portuguese pediatric patients
CONCLUSIONS: The findings underscore the importance of considering various forms of egg presentation in the diagnosis and management of egg allergy. The findings highlight the valuable discriminatory capacity and provided reliable biomarkers, such as ovalbumin for raw egg and ovomucoid for cooked and baked egg in risk assessment, aiding in predicting OFC outcomes and helping clinicians to make informed decisions in diagnosing and managing egg allergies, thus improving patient care and quality of life.PMID:38721955 | DOI:10.15586/aei.v52i3.1058 (Source: Allergologia et Immunopathologia)

Alpha-gal syndrome: when treatment of hypovolemic shock can lead to anaphylaxis
Allergol Immunopathol (Madr). 2024 May 1;52(3):60-64. doi: 10.15586/aei.v52i3.1082. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTDelayed anaphylaxis after ingestion of red meat because of galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal) syndrome has increased in recent years. The mechanism involves an immunoglobulin E reaction to alpha-gal, a molecule found in mammalian meat, dairy products, medications and excipients containing mammalian-derived components, and tick salivary glycans. Sensitization occurs due to the bite of a lone star tick and the transmission of alpha-gal molecules into person's bloodstream. We describe a case of alpha-gal syndrom...

Atopic Dermatitis: Disease Background and Risk Factors
Adv Exp Med Biol. 2024;1447:11-19. doi: 10.1007/978-3-031-54513-9_2.ABSTRACTMultiple risk factors have been associated with the development of atopic dermatitis (AD). Recent advances in understanding the role of genetics in this disease have been made, with discovery of the filaggrin (FLG) gene as the most notable so far. In addition to FLG gene mutations as a risk factor for AD, a positive family history of atopic or allergic disease in either parent has been shown to confer a greater risk of developing AD. Atopic dermatitis usually presents early in life and is thought to represent the initial step in the "atopic march,"...
